Grandfather clock, 19th century.Walnut and bronze.Measurements: 250 x 30 x 50 cm.High case clock, in walnut. It consists of an architectural structure, with a pedestal, a closed central body and a top with a sculpture of the Greek goddess Athena in bronze, under which the clock case is housed. Numerous other decorative bronze pieces decorate the case, from the scroll feet to the rocaille motifs on the flanks, as well as a depiction of Leda and the swan, among other classically inspired ornamental elements. The dial combines embossed metal and white porcelain, with Roman numerals inscribed on the latter in black. The dial is signed: "Gille Laine".
ROLANDO MOTRO MARCHETTI (Cuba, 1888-1944)."Bust of the Virgin.Bronze.Signed on the back of the back shoulder. It has a rotating base.Measurements: 26 x 24 x 13 cm.Bronze bust representing the face of a woman, with stylised features. The headdress as a nimbus, and the mantle that covers part of her head and shoulders make us think of a contemporary representation of the Virgin Mary.Rolando Motroni Marchetti was born in Havana, Cuba in 1888. He became a sculptor using mainly bronze as the material of choice for his sculptures. Some of his sculptures are still found in Cuba today, including a sculpture in a fountain in front of the Hotel Internacional, as well as a monument for the tomb of the Unknown Soldiers in Santiago de Cuba (a province of Havana).
AUGUSTE MOREAU (France, 1834 - 1917)."Boy with a Pitcher".Bronze.Signed.Size: 24 cm (height); 4 cm (base).Son of the painter Jean Baptiste Moreau, Auguste began his training as a pupil of his elder brother Mathurin. He made his debut at the Paris Salon of 1861, where he participated regularly until 1913. He was also a member of the Société des Artistes Français. His themes - genre, pastoral, allegorical scenes - and his style, realistic and graceful, link him to other members of the Moreau dynasty. He mainly produced bronzes, but also worked in marble and occasionally combined bronze and gold ("Victrix enfant", presented at the 1897 Salon). He produced numerous editions of his works, which were in great demand by the public both for their themes, which were very fashionable at the time, and for their naturalism and graceful beauty.Works by Auguste Moreau can be seen in the Museums of Fine Arts in Bordeaux, Dijon, Gray and Reims, as well as in private collections both in France and abroad (he was especially published in the United States).
Writing-table. Empire period, first third 19th century.Walnut and ebonised wood.Bronze applications. With key.Measurements: 76 x 180 x 87 cm.Majestic writing-table from the Empire period. The walnut wood, which dominates the whole structure, is combined with ebonised wood in the carved legs of zoomorphic inspiration. These are adorned with lion claws and masks, with the chiselled golden beard standing out against the dark ebonised wood. Two opposing arches meet in the centre to form an unrelieved chambrace. This arched shape is reflected in the curved waist, which houses three drawers, the central one being more elongated. It retains its key. The waist is decorated with bronze appliqués: pegasi and chimeras, palmettes and scrolls on all four sides. The rectangular top is covered with a leather mat, and on one side there is a sliding wooden panel for extending the surface, which is also covered with leather. As was usual in Empire furniture from the first third of the 19th century, it was inspired by ancient civilisations, freely recombining their iconography: Egyptian, Mesopotamian, etc.
Pair of vases. France, 19th century.Biscuit and bronze.Measurements: 45 cm. high.Pair of vases in biscuit, mounted in bronze. They have an ovoid body decorated with reliefs representing putti and eros carrying arrows, baskets of flowers and burning torches. The base of the belly is ornamented with gadroons, and sensuous festoons surround both necks. The vases rest on bronze feet, incised with vegetal fretwork. The handles, in a stylised geometric design, are also bronze.
Ancient Lion Foo; after Han dynasty models; 20th century.Bronze.Measurements: 39 x 53 x 24.Bronze sculpture representing a woman sheltering under a large umbrella and resting her feet on a Foo lion. The Foo lion, in many cases also known as the Foo dog, is an important symbol in Chinese Taoist culture and, due to its influence, also in Japanese and Thai culture. It is identified with protection against evil spirits, which is why they are usually represented in pairs at the entrance of temples, imperial tombs, palaces, government buildings, etc. They are also known as Imperial Guardians, and were very common in traditional Chinese art. They are attributed with mythical powers of protection, and appear as early as the Han Dynasty (206 BC - 220 AD) at the entrance of important buildings. Today, foo dogs are still frequent as decoration and symbolic elements at the entrance of all kinds of buildings, from hotels to supermarkets. In fact, foo dogs can be found both in China and in other countries with a Chinese emigrant population.
