A 19th century Chinese bronze incense burner, the pierced cover with dragon finial on a bulbous body with eight applied dogs of Fo, on wasted stem with applied figure of a dragoon, 53cm high (traces of gilding), on an associated Chinese hardwood base, with four scroll legs linked by a circular stretcher with pierced apron, 39cm high, 39cm diameter, Formally owned by Edward Ford Duncanson and thence by descent. During the 19th century Duncanson was a partner in Gibb, Livington & Co. Hong Kong and Canton. He also held many promemnant positions within Hong Kong until his return to England, these included Director of London & County Bank, Hong Kong & Shanghai Bank and The P & O Company (1888 onwards) Further investigation shows that in 1869 E F Duncanson was the resident partner in Shanghai of Gibb Livingston & Co Ltd, which appears to have been the locally registered trading company in Hong Kong from 1841. He is also recorded to have been the Chairman of the Shanghai Water - Work Company in 1882.
