The title of this well know Dali work translates to "Horse Saddled with Time". Explanations of the piece reference Dali's preoccupation with time and state that Time itself is the rider of this dreamlike horse. It forces the viewer to acknowledge their own sense of mortality. The bucking horse is saddled with Dalí's infamous melting clock, a symbol which first appeared in his 1931 work, La persistance de la mémoire. The horse has risen on his hind legs, attempting to rear and overthrow the clock, but his efforts are thwarted and only a slight elevation is achieved as Time cannot be overthrown.
