Henri Josep Francois, Baron de Triqueti (1804-74), a Dieppe ivory and dark patinated bronze, Ariadne/Cleopatra, an asp around her arm, seated in an Egyptian Revival chair, with eagles to angles, paw feet, rouge marble platform, ebonised base, signed to her head band, H De Triqueti, 1859The original statue is situated in the Courtyard of Statues (Cortile delle Statue), Vatican and was acquired by Pope Julius II (1503-1513) in 1512. It was believed to be of Cleopatra, who killed herself with the bite of an asp, however Ennio Quirino Visconti recognised the statue as being of Ariadne, in the 1700's.Ariadne was the daughter of King Minos of Crete who, after having helped Theseus overcome the Minotaur and escape the Labyrinth, was abandoned by the ungrateful man as she lay sleeping on the island of Naxos; she was re-awakened by the arrival of Dionysus, who married her. The Vatican sculpture is a copy of a 2nd century B.C. original from the school of Pergamon
