Cavan "Smith" CollectionofIrish Antiquities and later Artefact'sAn extremely good Collection of Irish Stone & Bronze age Antiquities, and later Artefacts, collected by The Smith Family, Kevitt Castle, Co. Cavan, in the 1930 - 1950's. It includes axe heads, spear heads, arrow heads, adze's etc., early rock examples, iron rush lights, swords, bayonet etc. The collection includes the following:64 - 1 A very fine bronze Spear Head, of early type, with narrow solid blade, decorated with strong centre rib in a sunk panel, and with wide socket, with loops at base, 19.5cms (7 3/4") long.64-3 An unusual flanged bronze Palstave or Axe Head with strong and deep side flanges, incorporating a deep stop ridge, the centre of the blade decorated with double reeded channels, approx. 17cms (6 3/4") long.64-5 A small Irish bronze Axe Head, with flat body, of typical design, approx 8.5cms (3 1/2") long.64-4 A small early polished stone Axe Head, with perforated end, approx. 9.5cms (3 3/4") long. 65-6 A small polished basalt Axe Head, approx. 9.75cms (3 3/4") long.71 A large stone Axe Head of polished flint, approx. 19cms (7 1/2") long.70 A large Vitrified glazed Stone, found at Loughoter Castle by Paddy Story, Sept. A very good later bronze Sword, with fine broad leaf shaped blade, and complete handle plate, which is pierced for six rivets, 62.5cms (24 1/2") long. A large and heavy bronze 18th Century Chinese Censor, the compressed globular body rising from a short spreading foot to an inverted rim, set at the shoulder with a pair of loop handles, the underside cast with a six character Xuande mark within a rectangle, approx. 25cms (10") diameter, 14cms (5 1/2") high. An unusual Archaic type Japanese bronze Vase, (19th Century) with decorative rim, drop handle, and tarnished effect with lizard like creature emerging from the base to the main body, with square worn caricature mark on base, approx. 22cms (9") high.; together with an early 20th Century Japanese bronze tubular Vase, with elongated narrow stem, embossed with fish and gilt highlighted eyes, with oval character mark on base, approx. 26cms (10") high. A COLLECTION OF TEN MINIATURE COLD PAINTED BRONZE FIGURES AND A PAINTED SPELTER FIGURE OF TWO DOGS UNDER AN UMBRELLA, the bronzes include a cat barber shaving a cat in a chair, a black boy and girl seated on a bench, a turkey, a deerhound attacking a stag, a hedgehog and a guinea pig stamped Geschutz to the undersides, tallest height 7.5cm, smallest height 2cm (11)
A 19th century bronze and brass sextant with hardwood handle, inscribed 'R.J.Paul Keane R.P.' in original case with accessories, 9.5in.CONDITION: Original case worn commensurate with age, with a split at the corner and the brass cartouche plaque lifting away, internally original baize now heavily worn, sextant and accessories are all tarnished, sextant being a green bronze tone with brass and silver scale, looks like one small accessory is missing from the left hand side.
