Roman / Byzantine, ca. 6th century CE. A hexagonal bronze vessel with straight walls with linear decoration at underside of rim and base, three attachment loops on the rim, suspended from three chains that connect. Note that the chains are of slightly different lengths and are comprised of loops of differing sizes. Given the consistent quality of the patina we deem this to be an old repair. How remarkable to find such an example of ancient ingenuity! Censers were incense burners. They are often difficult to differentiate from lamps, because they share a number of similar characteristics. Hence, it is also possible that this particular example although very likely an incense burner may have been used as a lamp. Size: 7"L with chain x 4" at widest (17.8 x 10.2 cm); vessel is 2.25" H (5.7 cm) high Provenance: Ex-private New Jersey collection acquired prior to 1980. Lot 328

Tibet, ca. 19th century CE. A bronze prayer wheel decorated with characters displaying the Sanskrit mantra, "Om mani padme hum" associated with the bodhisattva of compassion Avalokitesvara. Mani translates as jewel or bead and Padme translates as the sacred lotus flower. The middle part of the mantra translates as "jewel in the lotus" when addressing the bodhisattva Avalokitesvara. It is believed that when an individual spins the wheel, he or she will achieve the same result as if reciting the mantra that many times. For the first citation of this mantra, scholars point to the "Karandavyuha Sutra" which was published in the 11th century; however, some scholars believe that the mantra as recited in Tibetan Buddhism originated in the "Sadhanamala" published in the 12th century. A fabulous example with a lead dangler that produces a wonderful sound as the prayer wheel is spun. Size: 4"x 2-3/4" in diameter (10 cm x 7 cm). Provenance: Ex-Historia Antiques, Santa Monica, CA. Condition: Handle missing. Hole in one terminal. Surface wear as shown. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. Rome, ca. 0 CE. This is a heavy bronze handle attachment molded in the face of Silenus, the tutor/follower of Dionysus, always depicted as an older man with a large, full beard. This particular piece has three drilled holes and two hollowed out spaces at the sides of the head for attaching it. The consumption of wine was an important social ritual in early Roman society and Silenus is a common figure whose likeness signified the owner's affiliation with the cult of Dionysus -- think showing off a brand name for a popular type of beer today. Size: 3.5" W x 3.5" H (8.9 cm x 8.9 cm). Provenance: Ex. M. Reiniger collection Condition: There is expected patina and wear, but the artwork is clear. Lot 5b

Rome, ca. 2nd century BCE to 1st century CE. This is a cast bronze fulcrum attachment in the shape of a horse's bust with facial and fur details. Fulcrum attachments were placed on the fulcrums, or curved headboards, of the reclining couches that wealthy Greeks and Romans sat on during banquets. Because of the importance of wine consumption to these banquets, fulcrum attachments were usually related to either drunkenness or animals associated with gods -- like the horse. Comes with custom dark green marble stand. Size: 3" W x 3.25" H (7.6 cm x 8.3 cm). Provenance: Ex-Ronnie Bumgardner collection, West Virginia, US. Condition: The piece has a black patina and some wear but the details of the figure remain clear. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. We ship worldwide and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience. #111145

Lot 6

Rome, early Imperial Period, ca. 0 CE. This is a silvered bronze plaque with beautiful patina and excellent detail including remaining silvering. It depicts a bust wearing a heavy cloak and necklace; the figure has some kind of interesting headdress or hairstyle -- think Princess Leia. The plaque's frame is a pattern of punched-out circles and delicate edges. Silver plating was rarer in the ancient world than gilding; although both silver and gold were placed over bronze pieces because of their lower reactivity to oxygen, silver is more susceptible to bronze oxidation and a thicker coating was required. As with this piece, the bronze oxidation often works its way through the silver, partly destroying it in the process. Similar pieces have the central bust representing an emperor; this type of plaque may have originally been an ornamental saddle trapping, as ones held in the British Museum were. Size: 3-3/4" W x 3-3/4" H; 6-1/4" H with custom stand (9.5 cm x 9.5 cm; 15.9 cm). Provenance: Ex- Private New Jersey collection acquired 1970's Condition: One small corner of the frame is damaged but otherwise the piece is intact. Much of the silvering has gone, but some is still visible. The piece has a deep turquoise patina. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. We ship worldwide and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience. #111047

Lot 7b

Rome, ca. 100 CE. This is a small molded bronze figure of Cupid, the god of love, depicted as a cherub with wings outspread. This piece was at one time gilded, a process done where the essentially inert element gold is placed over top of the more likely to corrode bronze. A small piece like this would have been carried by a member of the god's cult. Size: 1.8" W x 3.25" H (4.6 cm x 8.3 cm). Provenance: Ex. M. Reiniger collection Condition: The piece has heavy patina and almost all of the gilding has worn off (though check the feet and hands for remaining); features are clear and easy to make out. One arm is broken at the elbow with the lower section missing. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. Lot 88b

Europe, Iberian Peninsula, Portugal, ca. 17th century CE. A large and impressive cast bronze door knocker, with an intricate composition depicting (from top to bottom) a pair of intertwining serpents above two winged dragons, their heads and bodies in profile, perched upon the handle. Both dragons are delineated with stippled bodies and outspread detailed wings. The serpents are equally striking with their long sinuous bodies with stylized diamond patterned skins. At the bottom, the handle is adorned with an oval shaped medallion incised with a diagonal stripe that is framed by four bifurcated projecting termini, this design perhaps representing a family or royal crest. Coca is the legendary female dragon of Portuguese mythology who according to legend fiercely battled Saint George on the Corpus Christi holiday. This conflict is layered with symbolic meaning. As the legend goes, when coca defeated Saint George, the people's crops would be poor resulting in extreme famine and death. However, when Saint George was victorious and cut off coca's head, tongue, and ears with his mighty sword, the harvest would be plentiful and in turn signify general prosperity. This said, the dragon has traditionally been revered by the Portuguese people who cheer for her during the Festa da Coca (celebration of Corpus Christi). Drago is another term for the Portuguese dragon represented in medieval mythology and illuminated manuscripts. The serpents above may refer to the Catalan version of the dragon which assumes the form of an enormous serpent. This is an incredibly rare piece of fine artistry, magical iconography, and superb condition! Just imagine the opulent door for which this knocker was originally created!
