A large gilt and silvered bronze casket with hinged chamfered lid, profusely decorated to the top of the lid with two quatrefoil panels with silvered depictions of mounted warriors with scrolling plant motifs around, each quatrefoil enclosed by a circle with scalloped edges with knotwork pattern between; to the edge of the lid two silvered figures of seated males to the long sides, and one to the short side, whole of surface decorated with gilt interlacing geometric vine pattern; to the edges of lid and casket decorative rivets; to the edge of the lid Arabic inscription; hinged catch with trefoil plate with scrolling plant motif, teardrop-shaped catch in the form of an animal head; to the upper edge of casket panel with Arabic inscription, to the centre of front and back two quatrefoil panels decorated with mounted warriors with scrolling plant motif around, each quatrefoil enclosed by a circle with scalloped edges with knotwork pattern between, to the whole surface gilt interlace vine pattern; to the short sides round panel divided into semi-circles with seated figures, scrolling plant motifs and Arabic inscription to the middle, whole surface with gilt interlaced vine pattern; decorative rivets to the bottom of all four sides, hinges to the back as double trefoils with scrolling plant motif; spindle feet to each corner. 6.59 kg, 31 x 22 x 25cm (12 1/4 x 8 1/2 x 9 3/4"). A massive pair of bronze handles from a substantial hydria or krater, with ends in the form of openwork acanthus leaves, arching handles with fluted bodies and ending in petals, raised rib to the middle. Born in 1922 in Philadelphia, Walter had a life-long passion for collecting. A long-time resident in London, he retired to New York and decided to pass on the antiquities and coins he had collected over his lifetime. Walter acquired coins and artefacts that interested him, so his collection, although containing many lovely examples, also contained many affordable specimens. Much of the material has been unavailable to the market for 30 to 50 years. Walter sadly passed away in 2015; he hoped that the items he collected would find new homes with the next generation of collectors.
