A Victorian bronze group of the Ghillie John Brown, his horse and a hound, circa 1885, cast after Joseph Edgar Boehm (1834-1890), inscribed BOEHM fecit to the naturalistically cast base, further inscribed TO DR. PROFEIT. IN REMEMBRANCE OF HIS KINDNESS TO THE QUEEN IN HER GREAT SORROW. MARCH & APRIL 1883, 41.5cm high John Brown died on March 27th 1883, having been first a servant and then following the Prince Consort’s death in 1861, a close friend and confidant of the Queen Empress. A patinated bronze model of a racehorse, ‘Eclipse’, cast after James Osborne (1940-1992), signed, limited edition 26/30, on an oval veined marble and mahogany base, 34cm high, 50.5cm long overall Eclipse, bred by the Duke of Cumberland, was born during and named after the Solar Eclipse of 1st April 1764. Eclipse started racing at the age of five on 3rd May 1769 and won all of his eighteen races. His eventual owner, Captain Denis O’Kelly used the famous phrase ‘Eclipse first, and the rest nowhere’. The great horse was retired to stud in 1771 due to lack of competetion as nobody was willing to race against him and died of colic on 26th February 1789, at the age of 24. He sired over 340 foals, including ‘Young Eclipse’ winner of the 1781 Derby, and ‘Sargeant’ winner of the 1784 Derby. It is thought that over 80% of modern thoroughbreds have Eclipse in their breeding
DAME ELIZABETH FRINK, R.A.(1930-1993) FIREBIRD, 1962 Bronze on a black resin base, signed and numbered 6/8 Height without base: 41.2cm (16.25in) Frink began exploring the theme of birds of prey in the late 1950's and continued throughout the 1960's. It proved to be a particularly fertile theme for her, and one which enabled her to express and convey her attitudes to war and aggression. Unlike contemporaries such as Reg Butler and Lynn Chadwick who similarly explored this theme, Frink was able to imbue her works with a strong physiological content and latent terror. Her birds are shown as though stalking their prey, raised on long thin legs with their bodies armoured. Firebird dates from 1962 and is one of Frink's earliest explorations on the theme. The bird is shown with its wings drawn tightly around its body like metal armour plates and with a pincer-like beak, transforming it into a fighting machine and an image of invincibility. In terms of sheer menace, only Hitchcock in his 1963 film, The Birds, has ever come close to imbuing birds with such terror.
