Served in Gallipoli from 12.9.1915, whilst in action Sivewright received a bullet wound of the right thumb (papers refer) and returned home as a result of this wound along with dysentery. Reengaged May 1916 stationed in Egypt until September 1917 when the Battalion moved to Nieuport, Belgium. The Battalion`s history records the 1/7th were billeted in huts amongst the sand dunes and it being a comparatively relaxed time. It describes patrols "in warmer weather it was accomplished in bathing costume and tin hat, with revolver between the teeth or behind the ear, but cold nights discouraged these efforts and we sneaked about on our side of the river wondering what we could do." November 1917 the Battalion moved to positions the other side of town to support the units on the front line. During the evening of 1st November advance parties went to look at the new position and it seems that Sivewright and a couple of other officers decided to go into No Man`s Land to examine some new barbed wire and were met by a patrol of enemy soldiers who threw grenades at them, killing Sivewright and the two officers. His parents hoped he had been taken prisoner of war and requested in the Stockport Advertiser (3.1.1919) for any information from returning POWs (www.stockport1914-1918.co.uk refer), Sivewright is commemorated in the Oostende New Communal Cemetery, Belgium.
