BRITISH INDIA: Victoria, 1837-1901, AR medal (42.62g) (Calclutta) (1861), Pud-861.3 (42.7mm), bust of Queen Victoria left, around VICTORIA D.G. BRIT. REG. FID. DEI., where DEI is an engraver`s error for DEF / within wreath, PUNJAB / EXHIBITION / OF / ARTS, PRODUCE & / MANUFACTURE, with small ribbon below, RR. According to Puddester, the Calcutta produced the bronze medals of this type (which has DEF. rather than DEI. and is illustrated in their records), and the Calcutta mint almost certainly also struck the silver medals. The Latin word dei means "God", and def. is the abbreviation of the word that means "defender." Since dei is not an abbreviation there should not have been a period after that word. FIL./ NATA 1688./ C. 1719./ ABSOLVT. IMP. ABOL./ IN FRIDERICVM./ MARITVM CARISS./ CORONAM. A SE./ ORDINVM. CONSENSV/ TRANSTVLIT./ 1720., minor obverse flan defect, lovely chocolate patina, Extremely Fine. The Swiss Johann Carl Hedlinger (1691–1771) was trained in Paris, became court medalist in Stockholm. In 1718 he became Chief Engraver at the Stockholm Mint, where he produced medals, coins and seals, including medals commemorating events in the reigns of Charles XII, Queen Ulrica Eleonora and King Frederik, as well as a series of 56 medals depicting Swedish rulers from the 9th century onwards in silver and bronze, c. 1728-45. A Luristan bronze model of a Horse or Camel Circa 1st Millennium BC Together with a Neolithic period small handled pottery urn, circa 3200-2500 BC; a Hebron Iron Age pottery jar, 1200-586 BC; and an antique Middle-Eastern copper bowl with punchwork border and calligraphy inscription The bronze 2 3/8 in. (6 cm.) long, the bowl 5 1/4 in. (13.3 cm.) diameter.
* Catriona McLeod (b.1946) A large Raku fired `Shell` bowl, with scallop motif to the centre, twin shell handles, and gilt rim; together with another Raku fired bowl, with turquoise glaze and bronze underside Both signed with initials `CMc` to base 13 3/4 in. (35 cm.); and 14 1/4 in. (36.2 cm.) diameter respectively. Provenance: Johnson & Johnson, Bembury Antiques, Somerset, where purchased by the present owner.
Henri Gaudier-Brzeska (1891-1915) Religious Head, 1912/13 Bronze Cast in an edition of 12 inscribed to the reverse with the initials "Z, M, P, K" to each corner 5 x 2 3/8 in. (12.7 x 6 cm.). Provenance: Harold Stanley Ede Jacob Rothschild Mercury Gallery, London, where purchased by the present owner Notes: The inscribed initials to the reverse are said to refer to the friendship between Gaudier (P) and Sophie (Z) with Murray (M) and Mansfield (K). The original white marble work from which this work was cast is currently lost, having been stolen from Kettle`s Yard, Cambridge in 1977.
