A bronze sunshine recorder Gregory, London, circa 1900. With glass sphere supported within vertical arc calibrated for fixing the latitude at the base and with horizontal curved scale with channels to take calibrated card for recording the hours of sunshine, mounted on square black marble slab base applied with plaque inscribed GREGORY, 51 STRAND, LONDON, 29cm high.
A French ormolu and patinated bronze portico mantel clock Charles, Paris, mid 19th century The eight-day countwheel bell-striking movement with gilt rosette and signed CHARLES, PARIS to the centre of the silvered Roman numeral dial, with foliate chased bezel supported between the columns of the portico case with floral swag frieze and finely chased Corinthian capitals, on conforming stepped base with block feet, pendulum incomplete, 48cm high.
A French bronze model of an eagle with prey, cast after Antoine-Louis Barye, late 19th century, portrayed with a hare in its left talon, alighting on rockwork, inscribed BARYE and with foundry mark DE BRAUX FR, 18cm high, (restoration, faults) This model bears close relation to Milan ou Aigle emportant un lievre, an example of which was sold at Christie’s King Street, ‘Barye Bronzes: An Important Private Collection’, 25th April 2003, lot 81. The catalogue note in that instance stated that no other casts were known of the model, and that it was not recorded by Poletti and Richarme.
An Italian bronze model of the Augustus ‘Prima Porta’, late 19th century, cast after the Antique, on a cylindrical marmo levanto and marmo nero Belgio plinth, 65cm high overall The original of this model dates to the 1st century B.C. It was discovered at Prima Porta near Rome and is now held in the Vatican Collection. It is thought to have been the first use in sculpture of the adlocutio stance, whereby the subject is given the bearing of influence and power by the use of a raised arm, suggestive of an address.
A French kingwood, coromandel lacquer, gilt bronze and breche d’Alep mounted serpentine front meuble d’appui, stamped ‘J.J’, possibly for Jean-Henri Jansen, late 19th/early 20th century century, 99cm high, 167cm wide, 57cm deep Maison Jansen was a Paris firm that specialised in interior decoration. It was founded by Jean-Henri Jansen in 1880. The firm originally retailed antiques and contracted to outside cabinetmakers but by the early 1890s Maison Jansen had established its own manufacturing capacity producing furniture of contemporary design, as well as reproductions, primarily in the Louis XIV, Louis XVI, Directoire, and Empire styles. Jansen is considered the first truly global design firm, serving clients in Europe, Latin America, North America and the Middle East by 1900
