Sir William Blake Richmond, RA (1842-1931) A monument to the artist George Richmond, RA (1809-1896), his head in profile with a skull cap within a laurel wreath flanked by two angels, each with an arm resting on the wreath, the other holding a torch Plaster relief 31 x 41cm. Provenance: The artist`s family, thence by descent. The provenance suggests that this plaster relief is likely to have come from William Blake Richmond`s studio and was possibly the cast for the bronze monument of his father made for St Paul`s Cathedral and which is now mounted on the wall of the Chapel of St. Faith in the Crypt. The monument was dedicated on 15th December, 1897, when the Dean referred to George Richmond`s membership of the first committee for the decoration of the Cathedral. It is not known how many plaster casts exist, but another is in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery. The bronze (see photo below) is set above a rosso antico marble panel with the memorial inscription in Latin in raised lettering and within an elaborate marble frame carved with scrolling acanthus and flowers and surmounted by a shield with fleur-de-lys. The initials `W.B.R. sculp J.R. desin F&B excud` inscribed on the monument indicate that the bronze was made by William Blake Richmond. John Richmond adapted the marble tablet from an ancient altar figured in C.H.Tatham`s book on classical ornament and the text of the Latin inscription is ascribed to Mr Justice Kennedy; Tatham was George Richmond`s father-in-law. F & B possibly refers to the stonemasons who carved the marble or to the brass foundry.
