Ca. 202 BC - 220 AD.A bird figure expertly crafted from terracotta, with naturalistically shaped bronze legs that lend a sense of lifelikeness to the piece. The bird's polychrome plumage is vibrant and finely rendered, with a well-defined tail and a red-pigmented head featuring wide-open eyes and a cream-colored beak. This exquisite example of Mingqi, or burial art, was created to accompany the deceased into the afterlife, serving as a representation of the wealth and status they held in life. The intricate detailing and masterful execution of this piece speak to the skill and craftsmanship of the artisans of the Han Dynasty. This piece has been precisely dated by means of a Thermo Luminescence analysis carried out by Ralf Kotalla, an independent German Laboratory. The samples collected date the piece to the period reflected in its style, whilst also showing no modern trace elements. The TL certificate with its full report will accompany this lot. Size: 120mm x 185mm ; Weight: 345g Provenance: East Anglian private collection; formerly acquired in the early 1990s in Hong Kong.

The moulded decoration on the shoulder imitates the cast bronze designs of earlier vessels, depicting various plants and animals such as birds, tigers and fish. The jar was likely made to contain alcohol or grains, and was likely from a funerary context, as Han burials frequently contain food storage jars thought to nourish the deceased in the afterlife. For similar, see Metropolitan Museum collection, Accession Number: 67.43.17. On the reverse side of the mirror, a central raised boss commands attention, accompanied by four smaller bosses arranged in a cross pattern. This symmetrical arrangement adds a captivating visual element to the mirror's design. The decoration on the mirror is divided into two main registers that encircle the central boss. Within these registers, intertwined scrolling dragons gracefully meander across a patterned ground. These mirrors served as both functional objects for personal grooming and as symbols of social status and refinement. Beyond their practical utility, they were also cherished as items of beauty and artistic expression. Furthermore, these mirrors played a role in rituals and spiritual practices. They were employed in divination ceremonies and were believed to possess mystical properties, facilitating the communication between the human realm and the spiritual world. Tang Dynasty bronze mirrors thus held a profound significance in both mundane and metaphysical aspects of life. Cette sculpture s’anime au gré de nos mouvements…Richard Orlinski has put a new twist on Kong with a series of 105 vertical stainless-steel slats sculpted with painstaking precision. 2 horizontal slats support the structure held together by invisible joints, not screws. The artist not only uses a pioneering welding technique, but also shows a different side of the sculpture depending on our viewing angle. He plays on solids and voids to show us a Kong that fades out to rise again, stronger, just by changing our position. The sculpture comes to life as we move…
