Squadron Leader T P, Tom, Gleave OC 253 Squadron Battle of Britain 1940. An unusual signed 40th Anniversary of the World's First Decisive Aerial Campaign - The Battle of Britain 15th September 1980 cover. Tom Gleave had a long, interesting and distinguished career. He became Vice President of the Guinea Pig Club after receiving ground breaking plastic surgery following his being shot down during the Battle of Britain. He went on to serve in a headquarters planning role and received many honours including a CBE, the US Bronze Star, the French Legion d'Honneur, the French Croix de Guerre and was an honorary pilot of L'Armee de l'Air and the Polish Air Force. Italic ca. 7th-6th cent. B.C.. Bronze. a) L. 20.8 cm. W max. 4.4 cm. b) L. 17.3 cm. W. max. 3.4 cm a) Lanceolate blade. Narrow central rib tapering towards the top. Condition: The lower end of the socket broken off. Slight traces of use on the edge of the blade. Surface with slight incrustations. b) Slender blade. Broad, flat central rib that tapers slightly towards the top. Long socket with transverse perforation for fixation. Condition: Minor traces of use on the edge of the blade, otherwise intact. Priv. coll. Switzerland, mainly formed in the 1970s and 1980s.
Greek late 6th cent. B.C.. Bronze. H. 2.8 cm. W. max. 1.5 cm The eating ape sits upright on a small, semi-oval plinth. His face is framed by a wreath of hair from which his semi-circular ears protrude. He rests his thin arms rest on his knees and devours his food, probably a fruit, with great relish. Italic late 6th-1st half 5th cent. B.C.. Bronze. H. 19 cm. W. max. 23.6 cm. D. max. 26.7 cm Compact bronze helmet whose closed crown rises up to a sharp medial ridge; two holes at the top to the left and right of the ridge for attaching a horsehair crest. A second, shallower angle marks the transition from the crown to the tall band around the base leading to a low, turned-up rim. The crown falls away very steeply at either side. The iron nails that have been preserved in the rim would have held the lining in place. Helmets of the Vetulonia subtype were especially widespread in Central Italy and in the majority of cases come from Etruria, where most of these helmets are thought to have been made. Condition: About half the rim restored. Crown preserved to a large extent reinforced with minor restoration work; a larger fragment restored; several cracks closed. Formerly Sumner Healey, New York, 6 July 1932. Thereafter Collection John Woodman Higgins (1874-1961), founder of the Higgins Armory Museum, Worcester, Massachusetts; JWHA inv. no. 1735. On the inside in red ink "T 35".
