Piranesis, Vasi, Candelabri, Cippi, Sarcofagi..., 1778, the stamp of Thomas Messenger & Sons of Birmingham is recorded on a pair of closely related lamps in The Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery and a Rhyton also features on the firms trade card of the 1830s

A Chinese bronze incense burner and cover, 18th century, the body cast with lotus leaf panels, with a ribbed banding, birds head handles, below a reticulated cover, detailed with dragons amongst clouds, the underside cast with a coiled dragon, the flat finial bearing apocryphal Xuande mark, 14cm high. Note: A similar example was sold Christie's New York, 30th March, 2005, lot 194.
A Chinese bronze kylin censer, 18th/19th century, modelled as a crouching kylin with its head turned to the left, tight curls to its mane, dragon's ridge with flames to body, tight curls all down to its paws and suspended flame-shaped tail, hinged head with a later fitting under the chin, standing on a ruyi-cloud rosewood stand, 80cm overall height. Note: 'crouching' pronounced in Mandarin 'fu', also can be translated as 'bring under control' or 'destroy', Chinese mythological beasts in crouching posture play a significant role of protecting the house from evil spirits. As a propitious symbol they would often be placed at temples, scholars' college and homes, in the main passage between the front door and the main hall.
Giles Penny - `Miss A27`, an aluminium and bronze figure of a flying woman, raised on a stepped square section support, the plinth with cast title, initials `GP` and date `00`, total height approx 70cm, together with related paperwork. Note: the smaller version of the sculpture which was placed on the Arundel roundabout and which now resides at Broomhill Sculpture Park in Devon.
An early 20th Century Italian green patinated cast bronze figural stand in the form of Bacchus holding a serpent aloft, supporting a circular ring with three applied anthemion mounts, the portly figure wearing a loincloth and appearing to strain under the weight, the circular base cast with scrolls and stylized grapes, height approx 61cm.

Provenance: this chandelier was one of a set installed in the Carlton Theatre, Haymarket, London, in the late 1920s. Images of the chandeliers in their original setting can be seen on the Theatres Trust website www.theatrestrust.org.uk.
