He served in World War I firstly with the 28th London Regiment and later the Royal Sussex Regiment, he was awarded the DSO. He completed his studies after the war at the RA and won commissions for war memorials including the Cameronian Memorial, Kelvingrove Park, Glasgow and the Southwark War Memorial (1922)
