Charles Bernel Kingwood Bureau Plat A Louis XV-Style Gilt Bronze-Mounted Kingwood Bureau Plat, late 19th/early 20th c., Charles Bernel, Paris, marked, inset tooled leather top, paneled frieze fitted with three drawers to one side, caryatid-mounted cabriole legs, acanthine paw feet, bails marked "EM" for Maison Mottheau et Fils, height 31 in., width 72 1/2 in., depth 38 1/2 in Note: Charles Bernel succeeded the ebeniste L` Hoste at the end of the 19th century. The firm Mottheau et Fils, primarily known for lighting fixtures, did well with the advent of electricity and displayed several of their "torchère lumineuse" at the 1900 Paris Exhibition where it was commented "we doubt if a more complete success is to be recorded to the credit of any exhibitor than can be conceded to Messieurs Mottheau et Fils".
