Lot 38

After Benvenuto Cellini (Florence, 1500-1571), an Italian patinated bronze model of Perseus and Medusa, second half 19th century, the hero portrayed standing contrapposto, heroically nude for winged sandals and a sash to his chest inscribed BENVENUTUS CELLINI FECIT, standing triumphantly above the slain figure of Medusa, and raising her decapitated head with his left hand, on rectangular figural plinth, 98cm high Cellini's vivid contribution to the Loggia dei Lanzi on Florence's Piazza della Signoria is a tour de force of mid-16th century mannerism. Commissioned by Duke Cosimo I de' Medici and unveiled in 1554, the sculpture joined other depictions of other historic heroes on the Piazza, including the famous David by Michelangelo, Hercules and Cacus by Baccio Bandinelli and the earlier Judith and Holofernes by Donatello. The bronze showcases the many new ways in which mannerist sculptors were pushing the boundaries of the body. The decapitated figure of Medusa for instance is folded up in an unlikely pose, and is an example of what critics would come to refer to as a 'figura sforzata' or 'forced figure'. This iconic sculpture was much admired by Grand Tourists, and many 19th century souvenir casts of the work survive. Prince Albert for example acquired a full-size copy of the bronze by Clemente Capi at the Great Exhibition in 1855, which is now in the Royal Collection. The incorporation of Cellini's figural plinth in slightly smaller models, such as this one, is quite rare.Cf Sotheby's Paris, 29 April 2004, lot 160

Lot 270

A pair of Wedgwood black basalt Triton candlesticks, late 18th or early 19th century, impressed WEDGWOOD, circa 28cm high From surviving correspondence it would appear that Sir William Chambers lent a late 17th or early 18th century bronze, inspired by the the Bernini Piazza Barberini fountain in Rome, to Josiah Wedgwood in 1769 so that he might develop a model suitable for his new black basalt body. This is often attributed to John Flaxman but could also potentially be the work of William Keeling. The Wedgwood triton was certainly shown to Matthew Boulton on a visit to Soho in 1770 (cf. Finer & Savage, Selected Letters of Josiah Wedgwood, p.87; Meteyard, Life of Josiah Wedgwood, 1865, vol.II, pp.212 & 218). Josiah Wedgwood's examples in jasperware were promoted in Wedgwood and Bentley's 1773 pattern book, and are discussed by Robin Reilly and George Savage, The Dictionary of Wedgwood, Antique Collectors' Club Ltd., 1980, p342. Interestingly they note that Wedgwood himself described the triton candlesticks as being 'after Michelangelo'.This lot is to be sold without reserve

Schinman, New Jersey, 1970, illustration of another cast p. 59 Evelyn Silber, The Sculpture of Epstein, London, 1986, no. 262, illustration of another cast p. 180 Kathleen Garman was Epstein's long time mistress and eventually his second wife. They met in 1921 at one of the west end clubs frequented by the bohemian art set. She was twenty, whilst Epstein was forty and married. He asked her to model for him and they immediately began a relationship. They had three children together, Theodore, Kitty and Esther. Kitty went on to become the first wife of painter Lucian Freud. Epstein and Garman married in 1955, seven years after the death of his wife Margaret. The present work is one of seven bronze sculptures that Epstein produced of Kathleen and one of the largest and most accomplished. Epstein chose his models for their physiognomic or psychological interest and included women from all nationalities and backgrounds including a girl from Baku. Epstein didn't respond to the demand from his dealers for small nudes and continued to sculpt portrait busts of females of distinctive beauty. Epstein constructed his busts by focusing on acute observation and by selecting certain characteristics he was able to show the personality and layer beneath the beauty. Please note it has been suggested that this work has been cast outside of the edition of 4 λ Indicates that this lot may be subject to Droit de Suite royalty charges.
