THE RUTH ASPINALL ANTIQUITIES COLLECTION An Egyptian bronze finial in the form of a cat, seated on a keyhole shaped platform and what remains of the socket, one ear is broken having been weakened by the original earring, height 8cm. (See illustration) These items come from the estate of the writer Ruth Aspinall. Ruth was the granddaughter of Sir John Ormerod Scarlett Thursby, Baronet. Thursby was a prominent Lancashire landowner, a Director of the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway, the Manchester and County Bank, and President of the Lancashire and Cheshire Coal Association (1916). He was High Sheriff of Lancashire (1905) and Deputy Lieutenant of the county.great passions were horseracing and chess, having been elected president of the British Chess Federation and president of the National Chess Congress.Aspinall estate contains many valuable items that had been inherited via the Thursby line. We draw your particular attention to Lot 2145, the Liverpool Spring Cup in our December Antiques sale, also Thursby's Trinity College chess medal, lot 2419.In our January Fine Art Sale, the most valuable paintings, lots 364 & 365 by Maxwell Ashby Armfield and Algernon Newton also came from the Aspinall estate.
A pair of Japanese bronze koro, the legs applied with Fo dogs, the foliate cast ovoid body with twin grotesque head lug handles upon tripod and a circular trellis base, height 23cm, together with two Japanese bronze koro, one with a bird finial to the lid and cast with birds amongst branches to the cast ovoid body, height 24cm, the other with bamboo cast handles and support, the body cast to one side with two thatched buildings, the other, two figures, height 22cm.
A 19th century Chinese bronze vase, the lid surmounted by a dog of Fo, the handles as stylised elephant heads, height 16.5cm, together with a pair of small Japanese cloisonne vases. Condition Report: The finial has been broken off and re-glued and one of the handles is a little loose. The vase sits well on a flat surface.
A quantity of jewellery to include a Sarah Bernhardt bronze button,a green and white silver and enamel brooch, six yellow metal buttons with horse images, an enamelled Guardsman brooch, a Tiffany bracelet with pierced heart, military nurse enamel brooch, crystal teddy bear necklace, Chinese bracelet and various other items.
Eight mainly 1980s designer coats and jackets to include a Jean-Paul Gaultier brown tailored jacket, Biba wine damask crepe skirt, tailored black wool skirt, Windsmoor black and white tweed jacket, Windsmoor matching skirt, bronze taffeta fitted jacket, Scarlatti mushroom silk quilted jacket and a tapestry and velvet oversize coat. A collection of metallic brocades from the 1940s-80s to include an 80s bronze and pewter lace dress, Laura Ashley 80s tapestry and old gold taffeta dress, a couture velvet and lamé brocade 60s gown, 50s brocade purple pleated dress, 40s gold tone floral print taffeta dress, 40s wine silk taffeta spider dress, a Deco pattern rich brocade coat, a gold and black brocade evening coat unfinished and a Moroccan metallic rayon embellished kaftan.
