λ André-Vincent Becquerel (French, 1893-1981), Lièvre Boulant, a patinated bronze model of a somersaulting hare, Susse Frères foundry, circa 1930, the loosely modelled hare above an integral rectangular plinth variously inscribed 'A. BECQUEREL', 'cire perdue', and Susse Frs Edts Paris, 11.5cm high overall, 15cm wideBecquerel attended the Ecole des Beaux Arts and worked in the studios of fellow animal sculptor Prosper Lecourtier (see lot 865 of this auction) and Charles Valton. He was a regular exhibitor at the Paris Salon from around 1914, and throughout the remainder of his long, prolific career. Becquerel's models, which were usually cast by the Susse foundry, are characterised by their Art Deco-influenced modernity as well as a sense of being suspended in motion. The present lot, which captures the hare mid-somersault, is a striking example of this.
A pair of fine gilt bronze wall appliques to a design by Jean Hauré, in Louis XVI taste, 19th century, each with a central putto caryatid playing pipes, descending to acanthus cast arms with scrolls terminating in flowerheads, issuing from berried and wrythen backplates, each stamped with initials 'TT' and 'CH' to the rear, 44cm high excluding later elec4trical fitments, 26cm wide, 14cm protuberanceThe model from which these appliques take their inspiration was designed by Hauré for the Château de St. Cloud. While trained as a sculptor, Jean Hauré is best known for the furniture and objets d'art he made as maître-fondeur for the Garde-Meuble de la Couronne from 1785-88. A pair of appliques of nearly identical design are in the Jones Collection in the Victoria and Albert Museum. For a similar pair, see Christie's London, Quai d'Orsay, Paris - An Apartment by Jacques Grange, 19 November 2010, lot 606 (£4,375).Please note, the date of these wall appliques should read '19th century' and not as stated in the printed catalogueCondition Report: Later drilled and wired for electricity. The wall lights bear the usual minor marks, knocks and scuffs overall consistent with age and use.The gilding looks as though it may at one point have been refreshed. The flowerheads may at one point have been reattached, as there is a resinous residue to their backs.one of the writhing floral stems is a little loose, it looks as though the bolt to the rear has been damaged. Some looseness to one of the arms. This can presumably be easily addressed. One of the scrolls is slightly bent, and there is also a darker patch possibly casting inconsistency or repair to the thinner part of this section.Overall these are in perfectly presentable condition.Condition Report Disclaimer

Brancaster Hall, by repute, also hosted Nelson during his lifetime. An Empire alabaster light similar to the example presented here was sold at Sotheby's New York, Property from the collection of Mrs Charles Wrightsman: the London residence, 28 April 2010, lot 18 ($18,750). After Roger Godchaux (French, 1878-1958), two patinated bronze relief plaques of Wartime subjects, circa 1920-30, one with a man in trench coat and helmet leading a mule, the other with a soldier and two horses at bust length, each indistinctly inscribed Roger Godchaux to the maquette and mounted to rectangular oak backplates, the larger example 23.5cm high, 34.5cm wideThough mostly known as an animalier, sculptor and draughtsman Roger Godchaux worked as a newspaper illustrator during the First World War, and it is possible that these rare and unusual plaques were derived from designs created then. The format of low relief shares similarities to a bronze plaque exhibited at the Sladmore Gallery, London, during the recent exhibition Les Animaliers, 1900 to 1950.
After Paul Comolera (French, 1818-1897), a patinated bronze model of a finch or a linnet, the bird suspended from a branch, diving towards a beetle crawling across the naturalistically modelled oval base, inscribed P. Comole ra and with initial B. to the maquette 13cm high, 12cm wideProvenance: British Private CollectionPaul Comolera was a student of Francois Rude, and made his salon debut in 1846. He specialised in the depiction of birds with precision and accuracy, of which the present lot is a good example. Comolera also produced models of birds for Minton ceramics from the early 1870s.
After Louis Leopold Chambard (French, 1811-1895), a large patinated bronze model of a youth called 'Le Bucheron', portrayed nude with a drape across the raised right leg, and bending a bunch of twigs with his knee, on a waisted circular plinth with plaquette inscribed LE BUCHERON FABLE DE LA FONTAINE, and signed Chambard to the maquette, 85cm high, the base circa 25cm wideThe present bronze takes its inspiration from Jean de la Fontaine's fable of 'Le Bucheron et la Mort' (The Woodcutter and Death), first published during the 17th century. A cast of this model was sold at Christie's South Kensington, 25 September 2007, lot 516 (£2,750).Condition Report: The bronze has a quite shiny blackish brown patination overall, the surface is fairly regular aside from one or two darker areas possibly remnants of a previous coating. Minor scuffs to upper right thigh and drapery. There is a row of four small dents to the metal on the inside of the left arm, and scuffing to that shoulder. The bronze is overall in perfectly presentable condition.Condition Report Disclaimer

A French patinated bronze model of the Borghese Gladiator, Barbedienne foundry, after the Antique, late 19th century, portrayed heroically nude and stretching forwards with his left arm extended, the right hand drawn back in preparation for a sword thrust, on a rectangular plinth stamped F. BARBEDIENNE. FONDEUR and with seal for A. Collas Reduction Mecanique, 66cm high
John Bell (English, 1812-1895), a large and rare English patinated bronze model of the Eagle Slayer, cast by Coalbrookdale, late 19th century, the heroically nude figure standing on a naturalistically cast base with a sheep and tree trunk, inscribed Bell fecit to the maquette, and stamped COALBROOKDALE to the reverse, approximately 82cm highVictorian Neoclassical sculptor John Bell first showed a version of the 'Eagle Shooter', probably in plaster, at the 1837 Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. It is listed in the exhibition catalogue of that year as entry 1176, accompanied by an anonymous poem, which reads: 'A moment more the shaft is sped, with lightening speed and steady aim A moment more the feathers' red, in the best blood the wretch can claim' The subject matter which inspired the model is Aesop's fable of the eagle and the shepherd boy. The eagle kills a lamb, and in revenge the shepherd boy slays the eagle using an arrow made of the bird's own feather. The Eagle Slayer was a highly successful model, and a large version in cast iron, also from the Coalbrookdale foundry, was shown at The Great Exhibition in 1851. That version is in the collection of the V&A, London. Bell was a prolific sculptor, whose most famous commissions include the 1856 Wellington Monument (Guildhall, London), the Crimean War memorial (Woolwich, also 1856), and the 'America' group that graces the base of the Albert Memorial. During his lifetime, Prince Albert had also been a patron of the sculptor. The renowned foundry of Coalbrookdale was known primarily for its production of cast iron statuary and ornament, and the present lot is a rare work executed in bronze bearing this foundry's stamp. PLEASE NOTE: this lot is 82cm high, and not 32 as stated in the printed catalogue. It is 'large', as described. Condition Report: PLEASE NOTE: this lot is 82cm high, and not 32 as stated in the printed catalogue. It is 'large', as described. It appears that this model would have had a bow or possibly a baton (as in some versions) in the arm aloft, this is not present at Dreweatts. The glossy mid-brown patina has some areas of uneven wear - please see images for details,There are no obvious breaks or joinsPlease see additional images for visual reference to condition Condition Report Disclaimer
A pair of gilt bronze candlesticks, in the manner of Etienne Martincourt, in Louis XVI style, 19th century, each fluted and acanthus cast nozzle descending to swagged stems with ram monopodia, cast in the style of Atheniennes, descending to a domed circular base cast with further foliage and berries, circa 22cm high, 10.5cm diameterA related design attributed to Martincourt is illustrated in Pierre Verlet, Les Bronzes Dorés Français du XVIII siècle, Picard, 1987, pp. 386-7.Please note, the date of these candlesticks should read '19th century' and not as stated in the printed catalogue
Cristophe Fratin (1800-1864), a patinated bronze model of a 'Literary Bear', the anthropomorphic bear portrayed seated in an armchair, reading and holding a pipe, with stamp FRATIN to base with 'N' in reverse, and with further inscription Fratin to the maquette, approximately 17cm highProvenance: British Private CollectionAcquired by the present vendor at Sotheby's London, Nineteenth Century Decorative Works of Art and Furniture, 23 June 1983, lot 151Fratin's distinctive style isn't as much about minute anatomical detail as it is about evoking a subject with sharp modelling and, not unimportantly, a sense of humour. While the sculptor created several monumental commissions during his lifetime (such as the large group of Eagles and their prey in New York's Central Park) he is most renowned for his small-scale depictions of anthropomorphic bears and monkeys, which defied the more formal conventions of sculpture at the time. Around fifty models of anthropomorphic bears engaged in a range of activities by Fratin are known, and this bronze is a great example of Fratin's witty subject matter.A cast of this model was sold at Christie's South Kensington, 27 March 2007, lot 194 (£4,320)Condition Report: The bronze bears the usual minor marks, knocks and scuffs overall consistent with age.The patina is a shiny warm brown, with a reddish tinge. Possibly bearing some varnish.Update to report: it has been pointed out to us that in fact the bronze is lacking a section of the pipe, which was broken off. This section has been found and is sold with the lot.Condition Report Disclaimer
Alfred Dubucand (French, 1828-1894), two fine patinated bronze models of birds, second half 19th century, comprising a woodcock and a partridge, each portrayed perched on a naturalistically modelled oval base, inscribed DUBUCAND to the maquette, each approximately 32cm highProvenance: British Private CollectionParis-born sculptor Alfred Dubucand made his Salon debut in 1867 with a wax model of a dead pheasant. Dubucand studied under Antoine-Louis Barye, and the older sculptor's influence is visible in the careful study of animals' anatomy and temperament. He is best known for his astute and finely rendered models of birds, such as the ones presented here. Condition Report: These bronzes have a rich chocolate brown patina overall. There is a very small shallow line to the side of the woodcock's beak, though this is likely a slight casting inconsistency and does not appear to be a restoration. The beak is also a tiny bit bent.Aside from minor marks, knocks and scuffs overall consistent with age, no areas of structural damage have been detected.Condition Report Disclaimer
Frederick James Halnon (British, 1881-1958), a green patinated bust of a maiden, called 'The Crown of Victory', circa 1920, portrayed facing forwards and wearing a crown of laurel, inscribed F. HALNON to the rear, mounted to a green serpentine marble plinth, the bronze approximately 26cm high, overall height approximately 39cmBritish sculptor Frederick Halnon was a student of Alfred Drury, and exhibited classical and genre works at the RA from 1904. The strong classically inspired lines and astute modelling of the present lot show the influence of Dury's 'New Sculpture' style on Halnon's work. This model, called 'Crown of Victory', was exhibited at the Royal Academy annual summer exhibition in 1919. It appears as number 1586 in the exhibition catalogue of that year. Another cast is in the Williamson Art Gallery and Museum, Birkenhead.Condition Report: The bronze has a matte green patination, with some slight wear to the tip of the nose and around the truncation where it's a warmer, browner colour. There are chips to the front and rear corners of the plinth, as well as some shallow losses to the rear moulding of the base. One potential diagonal repair to one of the corners of the plinth, where there is a darker green mark, though if this is a repair it is subtly and sympathetically executed. No damage detected to the bronze itself.Condition Report Disclaimer
Claudius Marioton (French, 1844-1919), a patinated bronze model of a Labourer called 'Le Travail', the bearded male subject portrayed standing and nude for a drape around the waist, and holding attributes, on a textured circular socle inscribed LE TRAVAIL inside a banner, inscribed C MARIOTON to the maquette, approximately 65cm high
A George III mahogany and bronze mounted tambour top writing desk, attributed to John Cobb, circa 1790, the domed tambour top released with a concealed catch, to reveal a tooled leather inset writing surface and four pigeon holes, above an arrangement of five frieze drawers around a central kneehole, with an opposing arrangement of false drawer fronts, on rectangular tapering legs, terminating in brass caps and castors, 91cm high, 118cm wide, 69cm deep Provenance: A deceased estate, OxfordshireBy family repute purchased from a London retailer during the 1960'sFor a very closely related example see Christie's, London, The English Collector, 19th May 2016, Lot 55 (£30,000). The Christie's example was part of a collection formed by R.W. Symonds for Mr & Mrs Jack Steinberg. A George III turned oak commemorative punch bowl made from timbers of H.M.S Royal George, formed early 19th century, applied with a silver shield shaped plaque inscribed H.M.S. ROYAL GEORGE. (108 Guns) Capsised 29th Augst. 1782. This Punch Bowl was turned from a beam of Admiral Kempenfelts cabin, by JAMES GERRARD. 1802, 16cm highHMS Royal George was commissioned at the start of the Seven Years War (1756-1763). After serving with distinction, Rear Admiral Richard Kempenfelt was due to relieve Admiral Howe in Gibraltar, 1782. The 100-gun, first rate ship of the line anchored at Spithead to carry out essential work on the cistern pipe. Once heeled onto one side, the vessel took on water through the gun ports and capsized and quickly sank in the Solent. This naval disaster holds significant importance in British naval history. Having been denied shore-leave, several of the crew's visiting families and dignitaries were among the casualties which exceeded 900 in total. A controversial court martial acquitted the crew and officers of any wrongdoing and tainted the reputation of Navy board. The masts of the wreck remained visible from the shoreline as late as 1794, serving as a macabre reminder of the tragedy. Prompted by local sailors, a series of pioneering dives by Charles and John Deane recovered much of the Royal George's timber and cannons, including a bronze cannon which later formed part of Nelson's column. The masts and beams were reimagined into household items and souvenirs. The wreckage was destroyed in 1840 by the Royal Engineers in a controlled explosion.
