Lot 35

A pair of French Napoleon III Greek Revival gilt-bronze torchères,attributed to Ferdinand Barbedienne and possibly designed by Ferdinand Lenuain, each with anthemion and lion mask detail, fluted column and raised on an elaborate tripod base, each monopod terminating in paw feet and supporting a neoclassical urn-shaped oil lamp with cast figural detail,45cm diameter171cm high (4)Condition report: Urns possibly associated but both with the same gilding. One supporting anthemion bracket missing. Both appear to be lacking chains as there are eyelets surrounding the lion masks. Some marks, scratches and misshapen areas. General wear, tarnish and discolouration. The urn on the torchere locking the supporting bracket wobbles a little. Some slight wobble in the joints but generally solid and of heavy gauge.

A matched French ormolu and marble clock garniture,late 19th/early 20th century, the white enamel dial set with Arabic numerals and inscribed 'Liebold Fils Strasbourg', the eight-day movement striking on a bell and chiming on the hour and half-hour, with scrolling floral and garland detail, on an oval base,29cm wide40cm deep11cm high,with a pair of similar neoclassical cassolettes,25cm high (3)Condition report: Matched as stated. Dirt and tarnish to bronze. Hairline crack running around the dial from 7-12. Running and chiming at the time of cataloguing, but no guarantee of working order. General wear to cassolettes.

A Louis XVI-style inlaid, parquetry and mahogany marble top commode, French c.1900, after Jean-Henri Riesener, modelled from the Concordant Commode at the Palais de Fontainebleau, the shaped and veined white marble top over three frieze drawers and shaped and panelled doors, the front of bowed, breakfront form, the sides flared, the drawers and frieze with ornate gilt bronze mounts, the doors inlaid with a central panel of an ewer and a basket of fruit on a specimen wood ground, flanked by panels with stylised flower heads, the sides conforming, within boldly cast gilt bronze mounts,166cm wide64cm deep94cm highCondition report: Minor chips to edges of marble, mainly the back edge. Repaired split to both side panel. Smaller door with wear to hinge edge. Faded.it looks as though it has been through a restorers workshop at some point in its life, both panels have been repaired and there are areas of the veneers damaged internally (see photos) other small areas of repair, evidence of glue between the backboards and expansion within the joints of the carcass. Gilt metal worn extensively and unevenly slightly pitted to the surface, split to the front right-hand door that is also visible from the inside.One key. It could easily go straight into a grand house.
