An early 20th Century bronze fragment of a porthole cover from the wreckage of the HMS Princess Irene, sunk 27th May 1915, impressed - "Princess Irene blown up at Sheerness 27 May 1915, 352 lives lost, 5.62ins x 2.75ins Note: The HMS Princess Irene built in 1914 by William Denny & Brothers Limited of Donbarton, Scotland, for the Canadian Pacific Railway, was requisitioned by the Royal Navy on completion and converted to an auxiliary mine layer. In May 1915 she exploded and sank of Sheerness, Kent, with the loss of 352 lives.
Charmian Fearnley (1932-2012) - Green patinated bronze group - Two figures with raised arms embracing, 23.5ins and 24.5ins (originally mounted on a wooden block), unsigned Provenance : Purchased by the vendor from the artist's daughter Note : Fearnley studied at The Gloucestershire College of Art between 1955 and 1957 and subsequently at the Royal College of Art where she won the Feodora Gleichen Award. Exhibited at R.A., A.R.A., R.W.A, as well as the Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts. She was commissioned to complete a number of portraits and sculptures for B.B.C. Television and the Daily Mirror. She was a pupil of Henry Moore and subsequently one of his assistants. She was married to Gerald Holtom (1914-1985) designer of the CND symbol
