An original WWII Second World War medal group to a Corporal John James Mott 263947 of the USMC ( United States Marine Corps ). The medal group comprising his:1) Purple Heart medal - named (Cpl John J Mott USMC)2) Prisoner Of War medal - named3) American Defense Service medal with Fleet clasp4) Asiatic Pacific Campaign medal with Bronze Star5) WWII Victory Medal6) Philippine Defense medal with Bronze Star7) Bronze Star8) US Gold Star Mother Pin ( Act Of Congress )9) Army Distinguished Unit Badge with oak clusterOn 7th January 1938 Mott enlisted in the US Marine Corps at the Recruiting Station in Washington DC aged 19. After completion of training he was assigned for two years service aboard USS Honolulu where he was promoted to Private First Class on 1st June 1939. Mott extended his listing for a further two years and boarded USS Chaumont for China in April 1940. By December the same year he was promoted to Corporal and in November 1941 he embarked on USS President Madison bound Olongapo Naval Station in the Philippines. Here his regiment was ordered to Corregidor Island which by April 1942 became under constant fire from Bataan. The Fourth Marines inflicted many casualties and fearing a massacre, General Wainwright decided to surrender his troops. All forces were rounded up and marched ( ' The Baatan Death March ' ) until they were loaded onto trains to board ships across Manila Bay where they are sent to one of the POW camps. Mott was moved to Philippine Islands Port Area Camp 11 and put to work in the dockyards under appalling conditions where he spent the next two years. In August 1944 Mott arrives at Osaka No 7 Branch Camp, Kamioka POW Camp. On the 25th January 1945 archive material shows Corporal John Motts death was recorded in the Osaka POW camp as a result of Acute Bronchitis. Between 1946 and 1948 Motts mother Gertrude received Motts American Defense Service medal, WWII Victory Medal and Asiatic Pacific Campaign medal. By 1949 She applies for and receives a Gold Star Lapel button and his Father received the same. By 1950 Gertrude is sent a letter informing her that the remains Corporal John James Mott have been permanently interred in Grave 105 in Manila U.A Military Cemetery, Philippines. Some years later Congress authorised posthumous entitlement to the following additional awards: Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart Medal and POW Medal. A printable memorial certificate for Mott was was printed from the American Battle Monuments Commission website for this collection.   Accompanying the collection is a folder containing considerable research and documentation including his recruitment and enlistment forms ,emotional copies of letters from his Mother to the Adjutant General pleading for information about her sons wellbeing. "Everyday i've looked for a letter from him. I did not want to bother you, with times like they are, but if it is possible please give me what information you can. Have not seen him now in over three years". Paperwork also includes a detailed timeline of his movements right up to his death being recorded in the Osaka POW camp. A thoroughly detailed and interesting piece of history.
