A fine Roman bronze oil lamp, ca. 2nd - 4th Century AD. This lovely hanging example with dual volute nozzles is 5-1/4 in. long, 4-1/2 in. wide and is adorned with an intricate decorative handle in the form of a nicely detailed palm frond. The lamp is heavily encrusted with mineral deposits. (R362)
Syd Solomon (Florida, 1917 - 2004) "Wake" 1976 Oil on Canvas. Signed upper right, along with being inscribed verso on canvas. Syd Solomon was an American abstract artist. He spent most of his time in his homes in both East Hampton, NY and Sarasota, Florida which influenced many of his paintings. His works have been featured at The Guggenheim, The Whitney, Corcoran Gallery of Art, The Wadsworth Athenaeum and several others.Solomon was born in Uniontown, Pennsylvania to a Jewish family. And this is where he also got his start painting, in high school. Later he went on to study at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1935 to 1938.[2] In 1940 he enlisted in the Engineer Aviation Regiment, First Camouflage Battalion of the military. During this time Solomon helped design camouflage for the California coast near the San Francisco area. Later he was assigned to the Royal Engineer Camouflage Corps in London where he designed camouflage to be used against the Germans in World War II. He even went on to earn the Bronze star for his contributions during the Battle of the Bulge. During his time in London he mostly performed aerial reconnaissance which inspired his ideas of abstract art. After leaving the military he went on to attend classes at the French art school L’Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1945.Sight Size: 42 x 40 in. Overall Framed Size: 43 x 41 in.
SET OF 3 EARLY 20th CENTURY GILDED BRASS CHANDELIERS An absolutely stunning set of 3 Gilded Brass Chandeliers of the highest quality. Large and impressive pieces taken from a Georgian Town House in Cheltenham. There is a pair of 7 branch Chandeliers 47cm drop, 67cm span. With a matching 5 branch Chandelier Downlighter 47cm drop, 60cm span. They all come with their original ceiling roses, hooks etc. There is some tarnishing to the pair of chandeliers, clearly visible in the pics, only adds to their character, probably due to the high bronze content. Extremely heavy! They will require re wiring. Extremely well cast with acanthus leaves and applied Ship like figureheads.
