A fine pair of high quality flintlock pistols, dating: first quarter of the 19th Century, provenance: Turkey, dating: first quarter of the 19th Century, provenance: Turkey, Iron, two-stage, both round, 16 mm cal. barrels; featuring an initial segment on the back, finely chiselled with floral motifs on the remains of a gilded background; thin rings at the girdle. It is probably an antique replacement. Barrel's tangs with a gilded half-moon and small, floral ornament. Iron flintlocks (one with small mechanics problems and grained cock), with a thick, roundish lock plate, chiselled and engraved same way as barrels, with the remains of a gilded background. Decoration en suite on the back of upper jaw. Stocks completely covered with thick, gilded, bronze plates richly decorated with rinceau and floral motifs in relief. Grips with metallic wire bindings. Trigger guards and butt-plates decorated en suite. Typical, long barrel brackets with false ramrods., length 48,5 cm.

A Greek omphalos phiale in bronze5th – 4th century BC; diam. cm 19,5; alt. cm 3; A bronze phiale with a ridged rim, a shallow tapering basin and an omphalos at its centre. The inside of the basin is ribbed and the omphalos is encircled by an intricate series of interweaving lines. There are traces of the original metal plating. In ancient Greece the term omphalos (navel) referred to the stone sacred to Apollo, situated in the sanctuary of Delphi. The omphalos form featured inside some phialae not only bestows religious value but also facilitates ease of handling: the phiale was held in one hand with the middle finger in the outer depression and the thumb supporting the side.
