This elegant patinated bronze statue is made after Classically trained French sculptor Antonin Mercie's original David vainqueur de Goliath (David Defeating Goliath.) This version includes a loincloth added for propriety after the 1890s unveiling of Mercie's original. The head of Goliath under David's foot has been replaced by stabs of stone that remove its Biblical subject matter. The sculpture is placed on an imposing marble and bronze base that emphasizes David's stoicism. No visible markings. Dimensions without base: 6.50"L x 6"W x 13.50"H. CAHILL 2/SUFF: R.”, British War and Victory medals, “3-8388 A.CPL C. CAHILL SUFF R.”, National Fire Brigades Association 10-year Long Service medal in bronze, on original pin fitting, edge of the medal engraved “CHARLES M CAHILL”. Contact marks to the reverse of the star and to the service number on the British War medal and Victory medals. Medals are accompanied by a large collection of other items and ephemera: Princess Mary 1914 Christmas tin containing a 1414 Christmas card and a paper wrapper for the cigarettes. 8 Great War silk postcards, some with inner cards, all have damage to the reverse consistent with being removed from an album. Army Book 64, named to 3/8288 Suffolk Regiment, stamped and dated Felixstowe, 20th January 1919. 2x Order of Buffaloes medals in cases of issue both with engraved details named to Charles Cahill with dates ranging between 19th August 1935 (1st Degree) and 8th January 1947 (Exalted). Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes examination certificate for Gambert Lodge, dated 26th August 1941. Defence medal claim card notifying of the issue of the ribbon for the medal (ribbon present in lot) to Mr C Cahill, National Fire Service. Borough of Sudbury Coronation medallion, 26th June 1902. 2 West Suffolk Education Committee attendance medals. 2 Pieces of patriotic hair ribbon (red, white and blue). Suffolk Regiment printed Christmas card (1923) from Sergeant and Mrs. G Ruggles with an undated newspaper cutting regarding their wedding. White metal pocket watch (not working). 3 cap badges (2 have been modified with a brooch fitting to the reverse). 2 Sweetheart badges (A.S.C. and Royal engineers). 2 newspaper cuttings (undated) relating to the death of Charles Cahill. A printed book of daily prayers. An interesting collection of items to Charles Michael Cahill who was born on 29th September 1892 and lived in Sudbury Suffolk. He served in France with the 2nd Battalion Suffolk Regiment from 10th October 1914 and the issued of the clasp to the 1914 Star is confirmed on his medal index card. He married Alice Ruggles in October 1916 and was at some point attached to 76th Trench Mortar Battery. After the war he settled in Sudbury with his wife and during the Second World War he qualified for a Defence medal for his service with the Fire Brigade. Charles Cahill died in January 1951 in Chelmsford Essex.

HERBERT STRÄSSER (1930 Lebach - 2005 Bücken) Versteinerter KopfBronze mit goldbrauner Patina, großflächig hochglanzpoliert, auf schwarz gefasstem Holzsockel. 1986.32 x 12,5 x 21,5 cm.Verso unten monogrammiert "H.St." und datiert. Höhe mit Sockel 50 cm.Das Aufgreifen und Umformen von klassischen Themen zieht sich kontinuierlich durch Herbert Strässers gesamtes Oeuvre. Das Motiv des Kopfes sticht dabei besonders in seinen Arbeiten der 70er Jahre hervor. Den Endpunkt der Variationen eines eingeschlossenen Kopfes bildet der 1986 entstandene, verstärkt abstrahierte „Versteinerte Kopf“. Wie bereits bei dem Werk „Kopf eng im Helm“ von 1979 wird ein menschlicher Kopf von einem aufgesetzten Helm umschlossen, bis nur noch ein enger Binnenraum von dem darunterliegenden Gesicht zeugt. Der glänzende Kopfschutz nimmt das menschliche Gesicht ein und verschließt es vor der Außenwelt, bis die zuvor greifbaren Gesichtszüge vollständig verdeckt sind. Hinter dem Kontrast zwischen rauer und polierter Oberfläche entsteht ein Hohlraum – der menschliche Kopf wird ausgespart. Es bleibt nur die äußere Schale des Helmes.

HERBERT STRÄSSER (1930 Lebach - 2005 Bücken) Hommage an Schlemmer und BaumeisterBronze, hochglanzpoliert, auf Bronzeplinthe. 1957.32 x 13,5 x 9,7 cm.Unten am Fuß signiert "H. St." und datiert.Nach seiner Ausbildung zum Grafiker und Fotografen bei Hannes Neuner entscheidet sich Herbert Strässer 1955 der Bildhauerei nachzugehen. Die kubistische Skulptur ist eine Leitidee für sein Schaffen, welches in den späten 50er Jahren Formungen von elementarem Wachstum erprobt, wobei besonders die Formaddition seine Werke kennzeichnet. Unterschiedlich weit reichen die Volumenelemente heraus, werden von Reihung strukturiert und durch die Gegensätzlichkeit der geschlossenen und offenen Strukturen gebrochen. Mit seiner kantigen, anthropomorphen Bronze „Hommage an Schlemmer und Baumeister“ gelingt es Strässer, eine Glanzleistung der kubistischen Skulptur zu schaffen, die in klarer Abstraktion das Wesentliche der beiden verschränkten Figuren erfasst.

Mit diesem Exemplar sind bisher drei Güsse bekannt. Baldens Rückkehr nach Deutschland leitete ab 1948 eine neue, produktive Schaffensphase ein. Die stark lebensaktive Bronze „Sitzende“ erinnert durch ihre mächtige Körperentfaltung mit einer organisch-dynamischen Formgebung sehr an seine vorhergegangenen Werke. Die kraftvollen Hände wie auch die aufrechte Haltung vermitteln Ruhe und Sicherheit.

Selten.Erwin Damerows Skulpturen aus Bronze und Naturstein begegnet man heutzutage vor allem im öffentlichen Berliner Raum. Meist sind es Tierdarstellungen und Portraitköpfe, aber auch Szenen aus dem sozialistischen Alltag in der DDR sind häufig vertreten. Sie zieren verschiedene Parkanlagen in Ost-Berlin, wie beispielsweise den Forckenbeckplatz in Friedrichshain oder den Humannplatz in Prenzlauer Berg. Unsere Skulptur ist eine der wenig bekannten Kleinplastiken des Berliner Bildhauers, welcher an der Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Berlin-Charlottenburg studierte. In müheloser Leichtigkeit fängt Erwin Damerow die junge Turnerin in dem Element der Standwaage ein.
