A BRONZE 'CHILONG' BRUSHPOT, BITONG17th centuryThe outward tapering sides crisply cast in low-relief with a continuous scene of archaistic, sinuous chilong with bifurcated tails amidst sprays of auspicious lingzhi fungus, all beneath a lipped mouth rim, and the base supported on three ruyi feet. 15.5cm (6 1/8in) high. Footnotes:十七世紀 銅螭龍紋筆筒Provenance: The Oriental Art Gallery Ltd., London, 24 November 1992來源:倫敦古董商The Oriental Art Gallery Ltd.,1992年11月24日Chilong or 'hornless dragon' with bifurcated tails were a common motif originating from ancient Shang and Zhou dynasty bronze vessels. Their appearance on late bronzes reflects a growing academic trend known as the 'search for evidence' (kaozheng 考證) movement which began in the 17th century. Although this movement originated in a renewed scholarly interest in ancient texts and inscriptions on archaic bronzes, as literati sought a more empirical approach to understanding their ancient heritage and began questioning the received tradition, it led to a greater fascination for decorative designs adopted from ancient bronzes too.Compare with a related bronze brushpot, but decorated with flowers, Xuande mark, 17th century, which was sold at Bonhams London, 7 November 2022, lot 65.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

A VERY RARE CLOISONNÉ ENAMEL AND GILT-BRONZE 'DOUBLE SCROLL' 'TROMPE-L'OEIL' BRUSHPOT, BITONGQianlongThe vessel ingeniously simulating in its form two scrolls bound together with a ribbon, the smaller scroll decorated with multi-coloured chrysanthemums within a honeycomb pattern, with further flowers scattered above, the large scroll decorated with further stylised florettes against a wan-diaper pattern ground enameled turquoise blue, the 'ribbon' dark blue with green foliate scroll tied with a bow, the gilt base flat. 9.5cm (3 3/4in) high.Footnotes:清乾隆 銅胎掐絲琺瑯捲軸式筆筒Provenance: Spink & Son Ltd., London, 1987Published, Illustrated and Exhibited: Spink & Son Ltd, The Minor Arts of China, London, 1987, no.101.S.Marsh, Brushpots: A Collector's View, Hong Kong, 2020, pp.154-155.來源:倫敦古董商Spink & Son Ltd.,1987年展覽著錄: Spink & Son Ltd,《The Minor Arts of China》,倫敦,1987年,編號101S.Marsh,《筆筒淵鑒:收藏家的隨心所悟》,香港,2020年,第154-155頁Scrolls, repositories of learning and art, whether containing calligraphy, a painting or texts, perfectly encapsulate the ideals of the scholar-literati. Indeed, the Four Arts of the Scholar were qin (the zither), qi (chess), shu (calligraphy), hua (painting). In this rubric, scrolls usually come to signify calligraphy and painting. It would have been entirely suitable therefore, for a brushpot in the form of scrolls to adorn the desk of a scholar. The literati appreciated the value of 'play' (wan 玩) however, and so-called 'scholar's objects' can be termed in Chinese as wenwan (文玩), or 'literati playthings'. The trompe-l'oeil effect of a brushpot formed as two beribboned scrolls entirely fits this aesthetic of elegant fun and would have delighted the eye of the scholar. See a cloisonné enamel guqin-shaped box and cover, Qianlong, in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London (acc.no.M.782BOX-1910). See also a cloisonné enamel box of scroll and brocade form, mid Qing dynasty, in the Qing Court Collection, illustrated in the Compendium of Collections of the Palace Museum: Enamels, vol.4, Beijing, 2011, p.161, no.112. Compare also with a related cloisonné enamel 'double scroll' brushpot of similar form, for which the present lot was probably the earlier prototype, late Qing dynasty, illustrated in ibid., p.364, no.294.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
A RARE TEADUST-GLAZED ARCHAISTIC VASE, FANGHUDaoguang seal mark and of the periodOf square archaistic fanghu shape, rising from a short foot to waisted neck, applied by a pair of mythical-beast-head handles issuing rings, covered in a lustrous tea-green glaze thinning at the corners and handles resembling gilt-bronze. 14.5cm (5 3/4in) high. The present vase is notable for its lustrous and rich tea-dust glaze which was inspired by and simulated the patina characterising archaic bronzes. This type of glaze was achieved through the precipitation of yellow crystals that stood out against the dark green background, producing the resulting chayemo (茶葉末) or 'tea-leaf dust' effect, which gave a rather rich and velvety appearance to the glaze. Its similarity to patinated bronze is further alluded to on the present lot by the thinning areas resembling gilt. This archaism is further underscored by the shape of the vase, which is based on bronzes from the Han dynasty.Daoguang mark and period teadust-glazed wares are rare, particularly those of the same form as the present lot. See however, a small teadust-glazed jar, Daoguang seal mark and of the period, which was sold at Christie's New York, 19 March 2021, lot 863.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
