1st Bn Royal Warwickshire Regiment October 1914 Officer Casualty Group of Medals. This group was awarded to Captain Cecil Glendower Percival Gilliat a pre war regular Officer who died on the 14th October 1914. Comprising: Indian General Service Medal, clasp "North West Frontier 1908" "2nd LIEUT 1ST R. WAR. R.", 1914 Star, with clasp, "LIEUT R. WAR. R", British War Medal (ERASED NAME), Victory Medal "Capt" Bronze Memorial Plaque " Cecil Glendower Percival Gilliat". The group has been attractively mounted into a glazed frame for display with a copy photograph of Capt whilst serving with the KSLI. Captain Cecil Glendower Percival Gilliat was born in Ireland and originally commissioned into the King's Shropshire Light Infantry. Transferring to the 1st Bn Warwickshire Regiment he saw service on the North West Frontier and at the outbreak of the Great War landed with his Battalion in France on the 22nd August 1914. On the 14th October 1914 now with the rank of Captain the Battalion was fighting near a small village called Meteren. A fellow Officer recorded the events that day "We were attacking a village called Meteren. My company was next to "Glennie's" when I fell. He saw at once, and ran to me with two of his men, and started bandaging my wound. It was a very plucky thing to do, as I was lying in a very exposed place, and the Germans were firing at me all the time. "Glennie" left me after he had put the dressing on, and said he would send some men to carry me back, but he was killed himself, shot through the forehead, when he got back to the trench" On this day the Warwicks would suffer 42 Killed and 85 wounded. Amongst the wounded Officers this day was a Lieutenant Bernard Montgomery, who would survive and attain the rank of Field Marshal.

Comprising: British Empire Medal (Civilian) "FRANCIS ROLAND HIDEN", British War Medal, Victory Medal, "J.64446 O.SIG RN", 1939/45 Star, Atlantic Star, Clasp "Pacific", Burma Star, Defence Medal, War Medal, Royal Fleet Reserve Long Service & Good Conduct Medal (GVR), "J. 64446 (CH B 21359) SIG R.F.R.". The group is mounted as worn, the WW1 medals polished. ... The group is accompanied by original RN certificate of service ... Three bronze shooting medals. ... Also Certificate for the presentation of the BEM March 1957. Francis Roland Hiden BEM was born in 1900 and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy in January 1917. He saw sea service as a Signaller during 1918 and after the end of the war remained with the Royal Navy serving on HMS Royal Oak during 1929. In 1930 he transferred to the Royal Fleet Reserve and in 1939 returned to sea duty. He was discharged in September 1945. Living in Birmingham he worked at Birmingham main post office and was awarded the BEM in 1957 for his services.

Rifle with fixed bayonet superimposed on oval oak wreath surmounted by eagle and swastika. Vertical round pin with ball fitting and JFS style hook fitting to the reverse. Retains original finish. VGC Designed by Junker of Berlin and instituted 20th December 1939, bronzed version authorised 1st June 1940.
