Lot 12a

Tripod mount, Circa 43-410 AD. A rare example of a Romano-British bronze tripod mount. The piece is figural and styled in the form of the 'Mother Goddess' with stylised features and decoration. The piece has a rectangular socket at the base, into which one of the tripod arms would have fitted and a single rivet hole on the reverse near the base. The lower section of the object is rectangular and undecorated. Above this section are the body and head, which are both lozenege shaped. The head has a rounded knop on the top and the body an integral hook on the reverse, bending 90 degrees upwards half-way along the shank. Dimensions: height: 80.28 mm; width: 44.89 mm; thickness: 16.58 mm; length of shank: 14.68 mm; weight: 169.61g.In terms of the iconography, this example is clearly a much more stylised version of the usual tripod mounts that are found dating to the Roman period. This would suggest an attempt to replicate religious iconography.A very similar example, identified simply as a "Celtic Goddess", was found in Cirencester, Gloucestershire (Toynbee, J. M. C. , 1964, pp. 103-4 and pl. XXVI). The sex of the individual in that example is made clear by two pellets on the chest. When one compares the iconography of this object with depictions of other female Romano-British deities, such as the Mother Goddesses, the top knot does seem to be a feature shared amongst many of them. Perhaps this depiction is therefore meant to be one of the many female deities that can be found in Britain and the wider Empire, during the Roman period.Reference: Toynbee, J. M. C. 1964 Art in Britain under the Romans. Oxford: Clarendon Press.Recorded as: PAS, ESS-A9905A.

Copious traces of gilding survive in the recesses of this design. On the reverse face of the brooch, the pin-lugs and catchplate are preserved intact, a chain-loop sited directly above these, which would have allowed this brooch to be connected to its partner. Preserved well, an unusual type for which no parallel could be found immediately. Size: 15mm. Provenance: from an English collection with an old ticket which state 'found in Peterborough'.

Lot 34

Early Anglo-Saxon Bronze Brooch. Circa  AD 450-500. The brooch demonstrates a small rectangular headplate with an integrally cast facetted knop projecting from its upper edge. The bow is facetted in section, curving strongly in profile towards the straightened foot. The latter is coincident with the catchplate, which is preserved completely intact and curves to the left when viewed from behind. The foot itself demonstrates a moulded zoomorphic terminal in the form of a horse's head, with flared nostrils and bulbous eyes. Condition: very good, dark brownish patina, small piece of catchplate broken out. Size: 110mm. Note: This brooch is probably best assigned to Martin (2015) group 1, a less common form of cruciform brooch with a smaller headplate. The seal is very well engraved with the image of a hawk/falcon perched on a gloved hand, around is the legend, "AVE MARIA GRACIA PLEN". Translated meaning, hail Mary full of grace. On the reverse is an intact suspension loop. The image of the hand, hawk and religious inscription suggests a strong hawking connection as the sport was not just popular among the upper class citizens, it was especially so among the clergy who were noted for their fondness for falconry. Weight: 7.03 grams. Size: 22.28 mm.Note: Pope Leo X was an avid falconer, who went on frequent hunting excursions with his birds. In some religious orders, falcons were even taken into religious services, so much so that nuns, many of whom during this time were rarely seen without their falcons on their wrists, were reprimanded for bringing their birds into the chapel by bishops, who complained the practice interfered with the services.

However, a great spiritual revolution was imminent. According to a late legend the following happened: On Good Friday morning, when the faithful were crowding the churches, Hubert sallied forth to the chase. As he was pursuing a magnificent stag the animal turned and, as the pious legend narrates, he was astounded at perceiving a crucifix standing between its antlers, while he heard a voice saying: "Hubert, unless thou turnest to the Lord, and leadest an holy life, thou shalt quickly go down into hell". Hubert dismounted, prostrated himself and said, "Lord, what wouldst Thou have me do?" He received the answer, "Go and seek Lambert, and he will instruct you."

A stylised interpretation with a slot in its upper edge representing the socket and with the loop projecting from one side. Pleasing greenish patina, a scarce type of object. Size: 22mm. Presented in box with original old collectors label.Discussion: a large number of these objects have been found by metal detectorists, with the vast majority originating in Wiltshire. It has been observed that they tend to congregate on Iron Age and early Roman shrine/temple sites, thus inferring that they have some religious function. For comparable examples, see Robinson (1995). Provenance: label states found 'Dorset'. Reference: Robinson, P. 1995. Miniature Bronze Axes from Wiltshire. WNHAS.
