Medieval Bronze `Cardinal Pedro Gonzalez de Mendoza` Seal Matrix1473-1493 AD. A substantial cast heraldic seal matrix, discoid in plan, with concentric ropework lines to the reverse and one similar to the 7mm edge; to the obverse, a heraldic design of a heater shield divided diagonally with hatched panels and the text `AVE` and `MAR` (for `Maria`), surmounted by a cardinal`s hat with looped ornamental cords with tassels to the sides; above the shield a Spanish marques`s coronet, below it, scrolled feathers and punched-point detail; surrounding the whole a circular band interrupted by the crown of the hat bearing the text in seriffed capitals `PETRUS GONZALEZ DE MENDOZA CARDINALIS HISPANIAE` for Cardinal Pedro Gonzalez de Mendoza of Spain. We have been advised that Mr. Miguel F. Gómez Vozmediano, Chief of References of the Historical File of the Nobility in Spain, and a team of experts of the University Complutense of Madrid, led by the Dean of the Faculty of Information Science, Mr. José María de Francisco Olmos have examined the piece physically, they have concluded that the piece is genuine of the XV century and it is possibly a seal matrix for private use of the Cardinal Pedro González de Mendoza. 144 grams, 57 mm (2 1/4"). From an old European collection. Pedro Gonzalez de Mendoza (born 3 May 1428, died 11 January 1495) was a Spanish cardinal and statesman, born into the noble family of Lopez de Mendoza, marquesses of Santillana, Spain. He was chosen by King John II to be bishop of Calahorra in 1452, and accepted the Pope`s bulla in 1454. As bishop he was also civil and military ruler of the town and its territory, and led the army of Calahorra in the civil wars of the reign of King Henry IV. In 1473 Mendoza was raised to the rank of cardinal, promoted to the archbishopric of Seville and designated chancellor of Castile. During the conquest of Granada, he contributed to the support of the army, and in January 1492 he occupied the town in the name of the Catholic rulers of Spain. Although more of a soldier and statesman than cleric, the `Great Cardinal` fulfilled his role as a bishop who used his influence with the royal court and in Rome to settle disputes between the Spanish sovereigns and the Vatican. As an archbishop, Mendoza lived stylishly, provided for his many children, and devoted part of his income to charity. He endowed the college of Santa Cruz at Valladolid University, was an advocate of Christopher Columbus at court and was instrumental in securing financial support for the explorer`s trans-Atlantic voyage. Archbishop Mendoza fell ill late in 1493/4 and died a year later. His biography was written by Salazar de Mendoza under the title Cronica del gran cardinal Don Pedro Gonzalez de Mendoza, and published in Toledo in 1625. Very fine condition. A circular cast bronze seal matrix with raised suspension loop to reverse; the central design showing the crowned bust of the king holding a sceptre and with incuse SIGILLV ALEXANDRI DE BOVVERGIA inscription for Alexander of Bergia (Berja?). 7.49 grams, 24.25 mm (1"). The family name de Bergia survives in Spain to the present day and is linked to the city of Berja, Andalusia. This seal is typically English in form and style and was found in Northamptonshire but there is no apparent record of the de Bergia family in that area; the crowned bust is especially reminiscient of the coin busts of Edward I and his heirs, from 1279 AD. The inscription on this seal appears to indicate that the owner, Burtelimi (Berthelme or Bartholomew) was from a place named Frapeli which might well be the French town today known as Frepillon. Found Leicestershire, UK. The manor of Highbury, London, was once part of a larger estate of Tolentone which broke up in the 13th century. A new manor house was built in 1271 by the Prior of the Priory of St John of Jerusalem and named Highbury, the land having being gifted to the Priory by Alicia de Barrow; the manor house was destroyed in 1381 during the Peasant`s Revolt by a mob led by Jack Straw and the estate was much later confiscated from the Priory under Henry VIII in 1540 during the dissolution of the monasteries.[No Reserve] Fine condition.Starting Price: £5

Medieval `Sir John ap Adam` Heraldic Enamelled Horse Harness Stud1299-1310 AD. A cast and enamelled bronze harness stud with square section pin to reverse, the heater shield head depicting the arms of Sir John ap Adam `argent, a cross gules five mullets or` (a red cross on a silver field with five gold stars), with some enamel remaining. 3.97 grams, 21 mm Found near Chepstow, Gloucestershire, UK 2005. Sir John ap Adam (born before 1267, died circa 1310) was the first (and last) Baron ap Adam and lived at Tidenham, Gloucestershire, formerly part of Wales. He was enumerated for Parliament from 1276-1307 and fought at Falkirk in 1298 (his arms are given on the Roll of Arms of Edward I) and was created Lord ap Adam by writ on 6th February 1298/99. His home estates were around Tidenham and a stained glass window in the church of St Mary & St Peter there depicts his arms to this day. He was claimed as a direct ancestor by John Adams and John Quincy Adams, 2nd and 6th Presidents of the United States of America. Fine condition. Very rare.Starting Price: £200
