Gabriel Dadd, Hercules and The Minoan Bull, bronze, signed, 32cm high, 41cm wideStephen Gabriel Dadd (1894-1915), was from an artistic family, his father was a painter who specialised in dogs and his uncle was the artist Frank Dadd. Although a natural athlete, his true interest was in sculpture having had a bust of his sister Elfrida accepted by the Royal Academy in 1912. Inspired by nature, he spent a great deal of time studying and drawing nature and birds. In 1914 he exhibited an animal group entitled 'True foes, once met are joined until death', depicting an Indian elephant crushing a snarling tiger. In 1915, he exhibited another bust, whilst his work posthumously exhibited at the academy in 1916 was a group entitled 'Lions and Prey'. Prior to the war, he earned a living as an arts teacher. Upon joining the Royal Naval Division in 1914, he was posted to Benbow Battalion in March 1915, he sailed for the Dardanells on 12 May 1915 his 21st birthday. He was killed in action 5 J
