A late 18th / early 19th century Indo-Persian Dhal shield. Convex lacquered animal hide form, with applied gilt bronze roundels. Velvet padded section to the inside, with 4 iron rings for holding straps. What remains of a old hand written label is also pasted to the inside. There is also a small hole near to lip of the Dhal, but it’s uncertain whether this was put there for hanging the item, or for the attachment of a strap. Approximately 57.5cm diameter. Condition: good overall shape and form, with age related wear. The lacquered finish has an overall crackled appearance, with some flaking and losses. One of the gilt bronze roundels has some loss of metal to the edge, and all 4 will move slightly on the shield. More cracking to the lacquered surface on the reverse side, plus a 2 inch chunk of surface lacquer missing to the underside. The velvet pad is complete, but there is split to the surface fabric.
