A pair of French patinated and gilt bronze figural five branch candelabra, 19th century, the five branches amongst flowers in turn above a muse holding either a basket of fruit or a sheaf of corn, all upon circular bases with foliate decoration. Height 54.5 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The figure representing Spring has three removable sconces missing. The flowers are darker patinated and some rubbing has occurred to the leaves, petals & stems. The gilding on the figure is good. There is gilt rubbing to the high points on the base and some signs of verdigris. The figure is structurally sound and regardless of any faults it is still a decorative item. Its partner figure representing Autumn has one removable sconce missing. One flower is missing its stamen. Similar to its partner figure the gilding on the branches, leaves and petals is darker patinated and rubbed. The gilding on the figure itself is good. The gilding on the base is rubbed on the high points. Overall these are an attractive pair of figures.

Lot 1179

Lot 1189

A pair of 19th century gilt and patinated bronze candelabra, modelled with a seated putto holding a French horn on a green marble base with applied griffin applique all on a square base. Height 29 (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: Both figures are missing a removable sconce. The left-hand figures fixed sconce has been soldered at the drip tray. There is a tear to the French horn that frames the putto's face at 4 o'clock if looking on a clock face. There is a small grey patch of solder to the French horn (6 o'clock if looking on a clock face). There is a small 2 mm tear to the rear of the French horn (at 9 o'clock if looking at a clock face). In the putto's right-hand there is a small patch of black colouring to the gilded French horn. The griffin applique is slightly loose but very much attached. There is gilt rubbing to the circular foot and square pedestal base on all sides. On the right-hand figure there is a small break at the top right-hand corner of the French horn (just below the mouthpiece) on the bar that attaches to the main body. Unlike its partner there are no black marks above the left -hand which holds the French horn. The gilding on the seat, base & the foot are rubbed. The square foot is excessively rubbed. Regardless of the mentioned faults they remain an attractive pair of figural candelabra.

Lot 144

A Japanese antimony charger, circa 1900, relief moulded with a Samurai Kyudoka before a long procession of figures, some of which holding aloft a large Bonsho, bronze patination heightened with gilding, the borders modelled as two dragons and a central pearl. Diameter 31 cm. CONDITION REPORT: There is a 5 cm split on the right hand edge (approximately 4 o'clock on a clock face). On the left hand edge (just above 9 o'clock) there is a small piece of dragon whisker missing. There is slight discolouration on the outer edges and the gilding is rubbed on the dragons horns. There is some gilding missing on the dragons whiskers on both the top and bottom. In areas around the edge some of the patination has erased and now shows the base metal. On further inspection it appears that the dragons around the edge have been gilded at one point but the majority of this has now been erased. The uppermost pagoda is partially gilded and the centre section is rubbed.
