JOSEPH ROBINSON KIRK RHA (1921-1894) Bust of a Gentleman White statuary marble, 72cm high Signed and dated 1865 The fifth child and eldest son of sculptor Thomas Kirk and his wife Eliza Robinson, James attended Trinity College Dublin in 1838 at the age of 17, graduating in 1843. During his time in Trinity he exhibited two busts at the 1840 annual exhibition at the Royal Hibernian Academy. In 1843 he was awarded a prize of five pounds from the Royal Irish Art Union for a study from life figure entitled ‘Andromeda’. Having been commissioned to execute the figure in marble he spent a year studying in Rome, on the generous proceeds. Strickland notes that Kirk, during his long and productive career, executed not only a great number of portrait busts but also many important public statues and monuments including in Trinity College the four figures of ‘Divinity’, ‘Law’, ‘Medicine’ and ‘Science’ on the Campanile. He is also responsible for the bronze bas-relief of the ‘Siege of Seringapatam’ which decorates the base of the Wellington Monument in the Phoenix Park in Dublin. Many of his portrait busts are in institutions such as the Royal College of Surgeons and numerous monuments are in Mount Jerome Cemetery.

A PAIR OF RENAISSANCE REVIVAL CARVED WALNUT BELLOWS19th CenturyCarved with winged figures, cherubs and swags within scrollwork, a grotesque mask to the terminal, the bronze spout modelled as recumbent beast, the reverse carved with scrolls, leather gussets, 84cm longThis example is based upon earlier Italian examples, one of which is illustrated in Edward Pinto's 'Treen and Other Wooden Bygones' 1985, plate 112, page 108. Another example held in the Victoria & Albert Museum's collection is also comparable, dated to the second half of the sixteenth century, Italian and also profusely carved in high relief from walnut. See accession number 4279-1857. Condition report: Overall the surfaces have been cleaned and polished, with some restoration at some point. Noticeably the front with a split running approx 8cm down from the side of the integral handle towards to the right hand side of the swag. General wear to the front with various small chips and nicks, rubbing and wear commensurate with use and age. The reverse panel wih more scuffs and rubbing apparent. Some old chips and loss in areas. Chips, loss and a crack to the base of the handle, which has been repaired at some point with pinning apparent to the reverse side. The leather is very worn, dry and thin in areas with numerous cracks. Some areas with visible coloured decoration and different embossed patterns. One section on the right side with visible join where one section of leather overlays the other. Some later later banding to the area above the terminal with various losses.The nozzle is slightly loose. There is a gap between the nozzle and terminal mask. Rubbed patina, worn and with a several holes to the metal over the beast’s snout.

Minor spots of Verdi-gris, including to the back of the ears and a small scuff/scratch to the back of the head.

A brass microscope, R & J Beck Ltd London, No 27301, "Star", late 19th c, lacquered or bronze finished, with two eyepieces and objective lens, substage wheel of stops and plano/concave mirror, brass mounted, fitted mahogany-stained lidded box The instrument in excellent preservation, retaining practically all of the original finish and showing hardly any sign of use, no wear to joints, adjustment operating smoothly, plano mirror with slight loss of silvering around the edges
A brass ejector candlestick, with drip pan, the cylindrical stem with aperture for ejector, 23.5cm h; an interesting cut steel and brass scale, the oval centre with brass register inscribed one side from 10 to 160, the reverse from 1 to 35, with cut steel pointer, rings and hook suspensions, 30cm h overall; a patinated bronze tortoise realistically modelled with rectangular aperture to the shell on a pink marble circular base, 5.5cm h x 8cm diam, one metal and two brass pestles and mortars, 19th c, mortars 9-11cm h and a Regency mahogany sarcophagus shaped tea chest, the top with central raised rectangular tablet, the hinged lid revealing pair of later rosewood veneered lidded wells and provision for a mixing bowl, brass spear feet, 15cm h x 27cm w (7) Ejector absent from candlesticks, dents and other wear. Scales in generally good condition with some minor rust patination. Tortoise possibly lacking lid to the rectangular aperture, other general wear consistent with age. All pestles and mortars showing signs of wear consistent with age, all polished. Tea chest - Interior later veneered and altered, replaced mixing bowl, rips to veneer on lid, replaced key plate, tablet to top replaced, minor veneer losses particularly front left corner return, other faults
