A LARGE AND IMPRESSIVE JAPANESE BRONZE VASE BY KIMOURA TOUN MEIJI PERIOD, 19TH CENTURY The baluster-shaped body with a flared rim and cast with a scaly dragon emerging from crashing waves, its ferocious head in high relief; raised on an impressive stand shaped as another writhing dragon; the vase signed Toun kore wa tsukuru in a rectangular cartouche underneath the dragon's tail, 56.5cm overall. A PAIR OF JAPANESE BRONZE VASES AND COVERS BY KIMOURA TOUN MEIJI PERIOD, 19TH CENTURY Of bulbous form and each raised on a flaring foot, both vases cast with a dragon in high relief emerging from scrolling clouds and fire wisps, the rims and feet cast with bands of key fret and stylised reishi mushrooms, the covers with spiraling waves extending to become the knops, the insides gilded, both signed in a rectangular cartouche Kimoura Toun, raised on associated wood stands, 35cm overall. (6) Provenance: from the collection of Professor Anne Birrell (1950-2020). Professor Birrell taught Chinese and Chinese literature at Cambridge University and the City University of New York. Her publications include Popular Songs and Ballads of Han China, New Songs from a Jade Terrace, and Chinese Mythology: An Introduction.

TWO BRONZE SEALS EDO PERIOD, 18TH OR 19TH CENTURY The first in three parts fitting inside each other, modelled as a sage seated in a pavilion beneath a rocky outcrop from which grow pines, with some remnants of gilt; all three matrices cut with characters, one inscribed Kihan Seshin (a retainer at the Kishu domain) and Kuki Shi In (seal of Kuki, a noble name); the other seal shaped as a double gourd raised on a square plinth, with scrolling tendrils and smaller fruits growing from the stalk, the matrix left uncut; 4.7cm and 4.3cm respectively. A LARGE AND IMPRESSIVE JAPANESE BRONZE ROOF TILE MODELLED AS A SHACHIHOKO PLEASE NOTE THIS LOT IS INSCRIBED YOSHITAKE ZO (MADE BY YOSHITAKE) 美æ¦é€ EDO PERIOD, LATE 18TH OR 19TH CENTURY The massive dragon-fish depicted with its tail pointing upwards towards the sky, its dragon head with bushy eyebrows and long whiskers, the carp-like body modelled with four large pectoral fins and crisp scales, a spiny dorsal fin and with a flared tail, with remnants of gilt, 160cm. Provenance: formerly an American private collection. The dragon-fish was displayed on the roof of a large mansion in Rhode Island, New England. Shachihoko are sea monsters believed to cause rain. They are often used as ornaments on Japanese rooftops to protect buildings against fire.

A LARGE BRONZE OKIMONO OF A HAWK BY THE MARUKI COMPANY MEIJI PERIOD, 19TH CENTURY The bird of prey naturalistically rendered, perched on a gnarly piece of wood with its head slightly turned to the side, finely cast with details in shakudo and the pupils in gilt, signed in a square reserve underneath the tail feathers Nihon kuni Maruki sei, 53.3cm. (2) Provenance: from the collection of the late Hubert René Joseph Georges Faure (1919-2020). Hubert Faure was the first husband of Elizabeth (Bessie) de Cuevas, who married when she was nineteen. Bessie was the daughter of Margaret Rockefeller, granddaughter of John D Rockefeller. A bronze bird entitled Poule Cayenne by François Pompon (1855-1933) from the same collection was sold at Christie's Paris on 14th April 2021, lot 184. See lot 358 in this sale for another piece from the same collection. The Maruki Works Art Factory was one of the most renowned bronze studios during the Meiji period. Located in Tokyo, the studios employed many of Japan's finest artists.

AN IMPRESSIVE JAPANESE JIZAI OKIMONO MODEL OF A HAWK MEIJI PERIOD, 19TH CENTURY Realistically rendered, the raptor with an articulated head, wings, tail feathers and talons, the eyes inlaid in gilt with black pupils and the beak possibly in shibuichi, with hidden numbers inscribed underneath the top of the feathers, 23.5cm. Provenance: from the collection of the late Hubert René Joseph Georges Faure (1919-2020). Hubert Faure was the first husband of Elizabeth (Bessie) de Cuevas, who married when she was nineteen. Bessie was the daughter of Margaret Rockefeller, granddaughter of John D Rockefeller. A bronze bird entitled Poule Cayenne by François Pompon (1855-1933) from the same collection was sold at Christie's Paris on 14th April 2021, lot 184. See lot 355 in this sale for another item also from the same collection. There are only a small number of iron articulated hawks recorded. A jizai okimono bird of prey by Myochin Kiyoharu is on display at Tokyo National Museum and another unsigned iron hawk from a private French collection is illustrated in Harada Kazutoshi, Jizai Okimono, p.058, no.19.
