Ptolemaic Period, 332-30 BC. A bronze amulet of a standing triad of Harpocrates between Isis and Nephthys, standing on a rectangular pedestal; remains of attachment loop to reverse. Ex Davidson collection; acquired before 1950. The Osirian triad may be made in sharply detailed composition materials, or often in bronze. Osiris and Nephthys hold the hands of Horus the child (or Harpocrates) who is usually naked and wears the sidelock of youth. 14th-15th century AD. A gilt-bronze octofoil plaque, slightly domed, with integral loop above; square escutcheon on a hatched background with quartered arms of a three-towered castle and a lion rampant, the arms of the kingdom of Castile and León. Property of a Middlesex gentleman; acquired in the 1980s. The territories of Castile and León were united under the Crown of Castile in 1301 after two centuries of rivalry and temporary annexations. The heraldic term for this form of beast is 'lion rampant queue forchee' or 'lion rampant double queued'. It is uncommon in English heraldry. Arms using the device are ascribed to Adam de Well and William de Morley in the Falkirk Roll, listing the knights and leaders present at the battle of Falkirk, fought on 22 July 1298, at which the forces of Edward I defeated a Scottish army under William Wallace. 9.27 grams, 44mm (1 3/4").
