The aim of the guild was to allow individuals to work in their own workshops whilst pledging co-operation and mutual support with their fellow artists. The guild expanded throughout Britain but was eventually dissolved in 1966. Everything was individually designed and handmade; larger public commissions included Buckingham Palace gates and under the direction of Sir Gilbert Scott, the bronze work and ornamental plaster figures of Liverpool Cathedral. One of Walter Gilbert's own designs was for a bronze medal of Joan of Arc very similar in style to this statue.
