Lot 529

A Neapolitan patinated bronze standard lamp in the Pompeiian style, Chiurazzi Foundry, late 19th century, the later electrical fitment on a bulbous oil reservoir and circular platform, above a winged sphinx sejant, on an Ionic capital, the tapering and reeded shaft descending to three cabriole legs with paw feet interspersed with downturned anthemia, on a triform ebonised wood base, 158cm high overall This model, listed simply as 'N169 Chandelier' appears in the castings catalogue of Chiurazzi & Fils published in 1900. The original Roman example excavated at Pompeii upon which the Chiurazzi model is based was relatively diminutive, so the Chiurazzi model was offered for sale with the extra wooden base in order to increase its height to a more suitable level. Indeed the illustration in the Chiurazzi catalogue has the lamp with the extra base in place
