A bronze figure of the Hindu goddess Kali shown with four arms; upper right holds scimitar, lower right a trident; upper left the severed head of a demon, lower left a bowl for catching the demon's blood, the goddess wears a garland of skulls and a skirt of severed arms, attachments to bottom of feet for inserting into base. 520 grams, 13.5cm (5 1/4"). Acquired on the London art market in the late 1980s. Kali is the personification of both the creative and destructive processes of time. She is one of the major deities of the Shakta school of Hinduism and is worshipped as a loving and protective mother. She has to major temples in Calcutta, that at Kalighat, and at Dakshineswar. 20th century AD. A mixed pair of bronze figures of Kubera, each seated with an elaborate crown and left hand holding a mongoose. 273 grams total, 70-90mm (2 3/4 - 3 1/2"). London private collection, acquired 1985-1995. Kubera is the Hindu god of wealth who was adopted by Tibetan Buddhism under the name of Jambhala. According to Hindu myth Kubera performed austerities for a thousand years for which the god Bramha granted him immortality and made him the god of wealth and the guardian of all the treasures of the earth which he has to distribute according to the destiny of the receiver. He is believed to live in a magnificent kingdom of jewels called Alaka high in the Himalayas. Kubera is always shown holding a mongoose which he squeezes to spit out jewels. An undated archaistic gilt-bronze hollow-cast statue of Avalokiteshvara on a lotus flower base, two arms clasped in prayer and two holding symbols. 1 kg, 21.5cm (8 1/2"). London private collection, acquired 1985-1995. Avalokiteshvara is the Buddha of infinite compassion who reaches out to all beings in distress and guides them towards enlightenment. His upper hands hold a rosary and a lotus flower, both symbols of meditation and enlightenment. The Dalia Lama is considered to be the earthly manifestation of Avalokiteshvara. Fine condition.

An undated archaistic gilt-bronze hollow-cast figure of Kwan Yin seated on rock, draped strap in her right hand supporting her left hand placed palm-upwards. 937 grams, 22cm (8 3/4"). Acquired on the London art market before 1995. In Buddhism, Kwan Yin is synonymous with the Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, the pinnacle of mercy, compassion, kindness and love. In this image Kwan Yin is shown seated on a rock in meditation and holding a scroll representing the Dharma, the teaching of Buddha, which she is said to be constantly reciting from. On the crown is depicted a small image of Amitabha Buddha, Kwan Yin's spiritual teacher before she became a Bodhisattva. Fine condition.
