Bronze, feuervergoldet. Geschwungenes Gehäuse mit Akanthusblatt- und Blütendekor. Metallzifferblatt mit röm. Ziffern (berieben), geschwärzte Zeiger. Rundes Messingplatinenwerk mit Schlag auf zwei Tonfedern, Pendel an Fadenaufhängung. Gehäuse verso u. unten 'E. Röse' gemarkt. (Verso mit Plexiglas verschlossen). H. 25,5 cm.

A BRONZE FIGURE OF VITHOBA IN A SHRINE, WESTERN DECCAN, INDIA, 19TH CENTURY in three parts, the god standing with his hands on his hips, holding a conch shell and discus, sheltered by a five headed cobra and framed by a makaratorana with kirtimukha finial, 18.5cm Vithoba is a form of Krishna worshipped particularly in the western Deccan. The brick, here shown as the square paving tile the deity is standing on, along with his distinctive static posture, is a reference to a story in the life of Krishna, when he was told by Pundalika to wait on a brick while Pundalika attended to his aged parents.

Krishna fought with him after hearing that his friends and their animals were being poisoned. Kaliya, after almost dying in the struggle depicted here, was spared and subsequently became an ardent devotee.
