Dame Elisabeth Frink DBE, RA (1930-1993)-St Edmund, bronze signed and numbered 2/9 Meridian Bronze London impressed foundry mark, height 41cm (16¼”), standing on a green marble plinth. Footnote; Dame Elisabeth Frink was commissioned at the time of the closure of the West Suffolk County Council (WSCC) in the reorganisation of local government in the 1970s. A full size version of this statue stands behind the Norman Tower, Bury St Edmunds, Nine scale models were cast, Dame Elisabeth Frink herself kept No.1/9. This example was given to the vendors’ father, a prominent member of the WSCC for the ‘special price’ of £200. It is known that one was bought by the Deputy Lieutenant of Suffolk as a present for Lord Stradbrooke, the retiring Lord Lieutenant at that time, two others were also offered to sponsors including this example, and three were apparently offered for commercial sale, although the prices and to whom they went are not known. Apparently this bronze was originally earmarked for Elisabeth Frinks mother as there had been some delay in the production of the other statues. Elisabeth Frink was born in Thurlow, Suffolk. She is widely recognised as the greatest British sculptor of her generation. St Edmund, King of the East Angles, is the original patron saint of England and there is an ongoing campaign to re-instate him. King Edmund was tied to a tree, filled full of arrows and eventually beheaded because he refused to renounce his faith to the Danish/Viking invaders. His influence was felt across the country and led to the building of the most important abbey in the region at Bury St Edmunds. Mystery surrounds where his remains are buried and many miracles have been associated with him.
