Prints (Ars Anatomica A Medical Fantasia Thirteen Drawings), [1972]. 15.5 x 22.5”. (BW) This intriguing set of 13 plates of medical art were drawn by Leonard Baskin, an American sculptor, graphic artist and printmaker. Baskin`s other works include a bas-relief for the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial in Washington D.C. and a bronze statue for the Holocaust Memorial in Ann Arbor, Michigan. These drawings were commissioned by Editions Medicina Rara, and were intended as anatomical illustrations without "the concern for scientific accuracy and logical sequence." The set includes an introduction by John E. Marqusee. Tall folio, loose as issued in a rust colored board portfolio and slipcase. This is number 677 of 2800 copies, numbered and signed by the author on the colophon, and printed for the members of Editions Medicina Rara, Ltd. (+A)

*A large archive relating to the family of Captain John Livingston, Royal Army Medical Corps. A set of four Victorian St. Mungo`s College, Glasgow Medical Prize medals, each bronze of navette shape, impressed `John Livingstone [sic]`, and differing prize `Medicine Session 1894-5`, `Clinical Surgery Session 1894-5`, `Surgery Session 1894-5`, `Forensic Medicine Summer Session 1894`, 40mm x 62mm, extremely fine, in a fitted leather presentation case (case worn), together with several education certificates awarded to John Livingston and other family members in metal scroll, and a number of related items including a pair of WW1 identity tags, a collection of approx. 15 letters written by Livingston between July and October 1918 to his family in Barrow, the content includes current position at the time of writing, movements that day, descriptions of the developments of the war and politics in Russia, America and at home, plus a quantity of family photographs, etc. Captain John Livingston (1872-1952), a native of Barrow-in-Furness, Scotland, served during the Great War with the Royal Army Medical Corps. Flag-Commander, Case 36552. On the 3rd February 1909, A.E. Williams fell overboard from the Alaricity at sea near Hong-Kong; Norris jumped in with a buoy and supported him until they were picked up. Admiral David Thomas Norris C.B., C.M.G., Royal Navy (1875-1937), educated at Clifton College, Bristol, joined HMS Britannia as a Naval Cadet, 1888 (aged 13), promoted to Midshipman, 1890; promoted to Lieutenant, 1896 specialising in gunnery serving as a gunnery officer in HMS Vengeance on the China Station; promoted as Commander, 1907 and flag commander to the Commander-in-Chief China Station, 1908; Norris then served as executive officer of HMS Dominion and HMS Superb, both in the home fleet. Commanded the armed merchant cruiser HMS Arlanza in 1914 and was posted to the Air Department of the Admiralty in London, where he was in charge of naval airships; appointed Commodore 2nd Class and Senior Naval Officer of the Persian Gulf division of the East Indies Station; In 1918, he reached Enzeli on the Caspian Sea with a small party of officers and men set about collecting and arming merchant vessels for use in the Russian Civil War, and by the end of October he had four vessels, to which were added some coastal motorboats and an air unit. 21.5.1919, with six armed merchant vessels, he attacked thirty Bolshevik vessels and destroyed fourteen of them, he was mentioned in despatches twice for this action and appointed Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB) in 1919 and Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) in 1920; from 1920-21 he was head of the British Naval Mission to Persia, and in 1922 he became Director of the Trade Fleet; promoted Rear-Admiral in the 1st Battle Squadron of the Mediterranean Fleet in 1924 and held this position until 1927; he retired on promotion to Vice-Admiral in October 1929 and as promoted Admiral on the retired list in October 1933. N.W. Persia 1919-20. Those qualifying for the clasp `North West Persia 1920` were originally issued with the clasp `N.W. Persia 1919-20`, this clasp was later withdrawn and those who had received it were then expected to return it for exchange. N.W. Persia 1920. This clasp was authorised under Admiralty Fleet Order 1173, 1924, to 2 officers and 2 ratings who served in the Anglo-Persian Naval Mission under Commodore D.T. Norris CB,cmG, RN, in north-west Persia between 10 August -31 December 1920. The mission`s role was to consolidate the British position in Persia by assisting in the development of the Persian Navy and Mercantile Marine on the Caspian Sea. In September 1918 Commodore Norris commanded a flotilla with Russian support and attacked the Turkish port of Baku on the Caspian Sea. However, by the end of the year the flotilla was menaced by the growing Bolshevik ships. Control of the Caspian Sea was returned to the Russian Navy when Commodore Norris withdrew in 1920. Battle of Britain. ...so few. A Folio Dedicated to All Who Fought and Won the Battle of Britain, 10th July - 31st October 1940, pub. 1990, together with ... So Many. A Folio Dedicated to All Who Served With RAF Bomber Command 1939-45, pub. 1995, each volume having twenty-five profile portraits in silhouette of Battle of Britain pilots and bomber crewmen, each silhouette signed by the subject with photographic portraits and other illusts., facsimile letters and documents etc., a biography of each individual, a.e.g., orig. dark blue goatskin, lettered and decorated in gilt, `So Few` with RAF embroidered wings inset to upper cover and Éso many with bronze bas-relief by James Butler, RA, inset to upper cover, each volume contained in individual silk-lined solander box, thick folio. Both volumes numbered 46 of 401 copies, signed by Michael Pierce and members of the creative team. Issued to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Britain and to recognise and celebrate the courage and heroism of the thousands of fighting men who stayed the westward advance of the Nazi menace, many of whom paid the supreme sacrifice. Box served with the 4th West Riding Volunteers from 1916 and the Royal Flying Corps from 1917; he was one of only two candidates to be accepted out of thirty-nine applicants, his first solo flight was after 5hrs 40mins of flying practise over Stonehenge, Box`s friend Lieutenant Jimmy Howe was tragically killed during his first solo flight when the aircraft nose-dived in Tadcaster 13.2.1918 (a black and white photograph of Howe, images of his grave, memorial card and newspaper cutting are included in this lot), served on the Western Front with 100 and 115 Squadron, based at various stations including Marquise, Paris (Le Bourget), Latracey, Chatenois. *Forde - Dover. A rare pre-war motoring travellers car badge, c. 1930s, having decorative enamelled design of Naval Ensign motif in lifebuoy border surround, and with applied enamelled flags of European Nations to bar below including Third Reich, each separately applied with screw-mounts, some plating and enamel loss & wear; together with GB `Foreign Touring Club` pre-war motorist`s car badge, nickel-plated bronze by Caxton & Co, Westminster. One of the first regular Car Ferries plying from Dover to France, was HMS Forde, a converted naval warship brought into service after the Great War 1914-1919. Forde renamed from HMS Fleetwood was sold to Townsend Bros in 1928 and converted into a car-ferry between Dover & Calais, fitted with a stern door which folded down onto the quay. However, this was unusable, and the cars were craned on. During the Second World War Forde served under the Admiralty as a salvage vessel. Afterwards she was refitted at Southampton and returned to Dover as a car ferry on 12 April 1947. She was withdrawn in October 1949, sold to Bland Line, renamed `Gibel Tarik` serving as a car-ferry between Gibraltar and Tangiers, finally being withdrawn in 1954. (2)
