Of various designs and sizes with fine quality decoration in a variety of techniques, in a hanging glazed display case, frame size 38 x 22cm, largest comb length 11.5cm. Ex lot 288. John Nicholson's 4th December 2015.From the collection of Pat Johnstone, a Cornish artist and sculptor, who also had a passion for collecting Asian antiques and especially Japanese combs, kogai and kanzashi. Her collection has been curated for over 40 years and includes items from the Miriam Slater collection. One comb has come loose revealing that they are held with blu tack. The condition appears to be superb but for some anomalous pink marking on the bottom comb. The frame is high-quality bronze
A Sino-Tibetan gilt bronze figure of Mahakala, 18th/19th century. With six arms, his flame like tufts of hair framing his fierce visage holding various implements, hinged elephant skin cape and wearing a tiger skin skirt, on an associated carved wood base, total height 10.5cm, width 8cm, depth 4cm.The protector deity Mahakala is a wrathful form of the primordial Vajradhara, the supreme essence of all Buddhas. In his six-armed form he is also considered as a fierce and powerful manifestation of Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion. Mahakala's fearsome appearance and the terrifying implements that he holds display his capability to cope with our persistent and unwanted negativities. A Chinese white metal opium pipe, signed, circa 1900. Height 7.8cm, width 2.2cm, depth 1cm; a Chinese silver spoon, length 9.2cm, 4.65 grams and a Chinese bronze Shou symbol, circa 1900, diameter 5.5cm. (3) The vendor inherited the collection from his father in 2015. The vendors father inherited the collection in the late 1950's from his Aunt Blanche Gertrude Ealand who preferred to be known as Heather and was born in 1903. She was best friends with the famous artist Dame Laura Knight and there is a well known painting showing Blanche dressed in her hunting and fishing attire and holding a shotgun. She was also the Queen of the Chelsea Arts Ball in the 1920’s.

Old circular collectors paper label attached to base inscribed 'XY11', with a flared rim and fluted tapering body carved with two chilong dragons in high relief, above a fluted foot rim, with ochre tones, height 13.7cm, width 5.8cm, depth 4.7cm.Gu, the archaic bronze form of beaker vases were replicated in various media during the Qing dynasty due to the Qianlong Emperor's fascination with antiquity. A Sino-Tibetan gilt bronze figure of Avalokitesvara, 18th/19th century. Standing with eight arms and eleven heads arranged in five tiers, the primary hands in namaskara mudra, standing on an oval lotus base, height 11.5cm, width 6cm, depth 4.5m.The eleven-headed Avalokiteshvara is an esoteric form of the Bodhisattva and became widely employed in tantric visualisations.According to the Karandavyuha Sutra and the Flower Garland Sutra, both compiled between the 5th and the 6th centuries AD, the eleven towering heads crowning the head of the deity represented the ten steps towards enlightenment. The fan of arms holding different attributes signified the measureless means to save all sentient souls from hell; see T.E.Neville, Eleven-Headed Avalokitesvara: Chenresigs, Kuan-Yin or Kannon Bodhisattva; its Origin and Iconography, New Delhi, 1999.
