POITEVIN, AFTER COUSTEAUA pair of Marley Horses with Restraining AttendantsBronzed metal, 60cm tall x 50cm wideCommissioned in 1739 by Louis XV, Guillaume Coustou's Marly Horses are considered to be masterpieces of French sculpture.The original works, sculpted from a single block of carrera marble, were installed at the horse pond at Louis XIV's Château de Marly.Spared from destruction during the French Revolution, Coustou's horses were moved in 1795 to Place de la Concorde, guarding the entrance to the Champs Elysée for almost two centuries.In 1984 they were moved to the sculpture garden in the Musee de Louvre.The popularity of iconic Marly Horses was due perhaps not just to the sculptures aesthetic appeal but for their prominent placement in Paris.The subject depicting a groom restraining a wild and startled horse, was not in glorification of of a Royal nor aristocrat but an image of the battle between man and beast.Throughout the nineteenth century, many reduced models were replicated in bronze and hold iconic status in French art.
