MACEO Y GRAJALES JOSE ANTONIO: (1845-1896) Guerrilla iconic Leader and second-in-command of the Cuban army of independence. Cubans nicknamed Maceo ''The Bronze Titan'' because of his multiple wounds in battle, while Spanish nicknamed him ''The elder Lion''. Maceo was killed near Punta Brava by Spanish forces after being betrayed by the physician of his headquarters. Rare D.S., `Jose Maceo´, one page, folio, Head Quarters of El Perico, 14th March 1896, in Spanish. The present letter was signed by Maceo six months before being killed. The partially printed document bears a printed coat of arms to the upper left corner and is the appointment of vice-Lieutenant Miguel Fernandez as Lieutenant, and signed by Mateo y Grajales in his capacity as General Major of the Liberation Army of Cuba. Overall important age wear, creasing and staining, with few holes and small tears to edges. Large repairs to the verso. P
A Finnish silver ‘Ruutu’ chain necklace and bracelet suite, designed by Jorma Laine for Kultateollisuus Ky, 1969, of lozenge and hoop openwork design, both with date code Q7 for 1969, Finish crown mark, town mark for Turku, maker’s mark, 813 standard, necklace length 62.8cm, bracelet 20.2cm. £200-£300 --- Kultateollisuus Ky was founded in Turku, Finland in 1899, making it one of the oldest jewellery manufacturers in Finland. They are particularly known for their jewellery designs from the 1960s and 1970s. Between 1954 and 1977, the company was known as Kkultateollisuus Viljanen ja Kumpp Ky, and employed the designer Jorma Laine, a Finnish jewellery designer, who trained at the art college Turun Piirustuskoulu (Turku Art School) and worked mainly in silver and bronze in an abstract style.

A 19th c cast iron rectangular plaque of a cow, pierced suspension holes, reeded border, 11.5 x 15.5cm, indistinct foundry mark to verso, a tinplate model of a deer, early-mid 20th c, a brass model of a pig, another of a pair of rams head butting, an 18th c bronze intaglio seal, the matrix with farming devices and script, an early 20th c composition table-top bull, traces of velvet, 33cm l, etc., (7) The plaque with rust and dirt deposits. Tinplate deer wonky, wear and some rust deposits. The other pieces in mixed condition, though generally good all have varying degrees of wear, etc.

A South East Asian gilt-patinated bronze of Bodhisattva, 19th c, seated on a lotus base, chased with cloud scrolls, traces of red pigment, 20.5cm h, and a dark-painted Indian bronze of a deity, holding an instrument, 13cm high, (2) Bodhisattva with some ligh wear, rubbed worn losses, some dirt.
