Literature Louise Irvine and Paul Atterbury Gilbert Bayes: Sculptor 1872-1953, Richard Dennis Publications, page 159 for the two versions Bayes designed of Earl Haig (1861-1928) on horseback for the Haig Memorial.

A large walnut breakfront bookcase by Sidney Barnsley, the central double, glazed doors flanked by single doors, above glazed curtained doors, constructed with dovetail joints, chip carved ebony banding, on sleigh feet, the shallow overmantel inlaid with ebony diamond band and chip-carved beading, with patinated bronze door furniture, 213cm wide, 227cm. high, 38cm deep. Provenance Charles Harold St John Hornby (1867-1946), Chantmarle House, Dorset and thence by descent. St John Hornby, as he was widely known, was both a successful businessman and a private printer. Educated at Harrow and New College, Oxford, Hornby rowed, as stroke, for the University boat in 1890 and the following year travelled the world with his College friend W.F.D. (Freddy) Smith, Later Lord Hambledon. Smith asked Hornby to join him on the board of his family firm, W.H. Smith & Son, and the firm remained dominant in their industry and survived the First World War under his guidance. Hornby's main passions, outside his work, were the Ashendene Press, his private press, initially based in Hertfordshire but subsequently in Shelley House on the Chelsea Embankment. Hornby had met Emery Walker and Sydney Cockerell (then William Morris' secretary at the Kelmscott Press) in 1900 and they encouraged Hornby to have the typefaces, 'Subiaco' and 'Ptolemy', specifically designed for the press. Ashendene went on to produce many highly regarded and limited books. In 1919, Hornby bought Chantmarle in Dorset, a fine but remodelled house that had started life out as a Manor House for the monks of Milton Abbey in the 13th century. It was here that Hornby commissioned the Barnsleys, Powells and Waals to furnish his new house, and an article in Country Life of July 7th 1950 shows a number of pieces of furniture by both Ernest and Sidney Barnsley as well as a set of plates by the Powells illustrating aspects of Hornby's life and interests. The same article also states 'The products of the Gimson-Barnsley school are little heard of today, but by breaking with traditional forms and concentrating on simplicity of design, fine finish and beautiful woods, they anticipated in their hand-made pieces several of the ideals of later designers who have accepted the aid of the machine'. The three pieces offered here, exemplify this sentiment perfectly.

Literature Deborah Edwards Bertram Mackennal, Art Gallery NSW, page 115 for an example illustrated. It is believed this model was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1897.

A French late 19th century plum pudding mahogany, gilt bronze and marquetry double bed frame, the serpentine head and foot boards with reeded and gilt crossed ribbon decoration and gilt bronze floral rosettes to the angles, the foot with an oval marquetry reserve with a musical trophy within a gilt bronze laurel and tied ribbon frame, raised on tapered fluted feet with foliate gilt sabots, 59in. (150cm.) wide, 52½in. (133.5cm.) high, 79½in. (202cm.) long.

A Japanese patinated bronze Usabata vase, early 20th century, dark brown patination, two piece, the top section of shallow saucer form with central deep well, raised on a cup and trumpet form base with incised Greek key decoration and conforming angular twin handles, 11 1/8in. (28.2cm.) high.* Condition: One handle slightly loose. Surface of dark brown patination has some speckled matting to the lower trumpet base and interior of bowl. Some wear to patination to top edge of base section. Small casting flaw to one corner of lower key to one handle.

A Japanese gold lacquer double sided taiko (drum), the two skins attached with gilt bronze/iron studs, the body decorated with hiramaki-e design depicting a tiger and dragon amidst a tree top on dark red ground, carrying handles to side, approximately 18in. (45.8cm.) diameter, standing, 15½in. (39.4cm.) high.* Condition: One side handle missing, one skin with 1¾in tear/flap, side of drum with scratches in places.

(64.2cm.) long, together with a boxed locomotive of the above by Bachmann.* Saint Edmund Hall - built January 1936, withdrawn 1962, scrapped - King, Norwich.** Condition: Heavy plate with original paint work, very good condition.

A French late 19th century plum pudding mahogany, marquetry and gilt bronze clothes press, the slight breakfront moulded top with reeded and gilt crossed ribbon decoration, over a central mirrored door with incuse top angles with gilt bronze floral rosettes, enclosing five adjustable shelves and lower drawer, flanked by rounded canted corners with tied ribbon and oak leaf & acorn mounts, the sides with oval floral marquetry within a gilt metal frame with ribboned surmount, raised on tapered feet with foliate sabots, 57½ x 20¼in. (146 x 51.5cm.), 86½in. (220cm.) high.

A 19th century Vienna cold painted bronze desk top letter clip in the form of a running fox with duck, mounted on a stepped rectangular oak plinth with hanging loop if needed, the bronze 10½in. (26.8cm.). *Condition: the bronze has been varnished, hinge loose with movement, otherwise very good.
