A bronze plate Scandinavian type brooch with openwork plaque of a dragon with transverse billets to the body, almond eye and gaping mouth, body tapering to a tail and enmeshed; pin-lugs, spring, pin and catchplate to the reverse, traces of the original gilding. Jarlath Daly (Ireland b.1956) Liam (Billy) Whelan (1935-1958) Bronze, 2007. Liam Whelan was one of Ireland's greatest soccer players. In September 1957, Liam Whelan scored twice in a European Cup tie for Manchester United against Shamrock Rovers at Dalymount Park, just up the road from where he grew up in Dublin. Less than five months later, he died along with seven team-mates in the Munich Air Disaster. one of the eight Manchester United players who died in the tragedy when aged just 22.
