A New Zealand Medal, 1866, awarded to ENSIGN E.C. MILNER, 2ND BN.18TH RYL.IRISH REGT.(Confirmed on the roll. Edward Champneys Milner was born in 1846 and educated at Marlborough College. He served in The New Zealand War of 1860-66 as an Ensign in the 2nd Bn of The Royal Irish regiment. Upon his retirement, he was Lieutenant Colonel of the 18th Bn. A newspaper obituary announcing his death (Globe Tuesday 3rd July 1917) states 'one time professor at Sandhurst and afterwards in partnership with Dr Miller Maguire, as a coach having under their tuition Prince Alexander of Teck, the late Prince Christian Victor, General Sir Stanley Maud, and General Sir E Allenby); a Victory Medal, bronze example, awarded to LT.COL.E.F.MILNER ( Edward Francis Milner, commissioned into the Royal Irish Regiment from Sandhurst in 1891. Served in India with the 1st Bn Royal Irish Regiment, went on to serve during the Boer War. Served during The Great War landing in France on 21st June 1915. On 30th April 1918 he was placed on the half pay list due to being in ill health. Entitled to an 1895 India General Service Medal, Queen's South Africa Medal, King's South Africa Medal and 1914/15 Trio. Mentioned in Dispatches for Boer War, announced London Gazette 29th July 1902); a British War Medal, awarded to CAPT. A.K. HARVEY-JAMES. (Arthur Keedwell Harvey-James was commissioned in the East Kent Regiment (The Buffs) after enlisting in the Artists Rifles in 1914. He was sadly killed in action on 15 April 1917 and is buried at St. Patrick's Cemetery, Loos. He was Mentioned in Despatches. In civilian life he was the actor and author Arthur Scott Crave. He starred as Richard I in the 1913 film Ivanhoe); a Pair of Dress Studs, each set with three seed pearls, boxed (4) CONDITION REPORT: . A Japanese Koto Tanto Dagger, the 21cm steel blade with wide undulating hamon, the tang with two mekugi ana, line engraved brass habaki (formerly two piece, one piece now missing), the bronze tsuba chiselled with undulating waves, the blue braid bound same hilt with parcel gilt bronze Oni menuki, the parcel gilt bronze fuchi (signed "Somin") and kashira worked with seated figures, the black lacquer saya with parcel gilt bronze mounts and kozuka with bronze grip worked with mythical beasts, 47cm CONDITION REPORT: . Fine pitting to blade, with dried on grease. Blade does not fit the hilt very well because part of the habaki is missing. Some chips to the lacquer saya, but generally in good condition with good quality fittings, some may be matched.
A Japanese Shinto Wakizashi, 53.5cm steel blade with slightly undulating hamon, one side of the tang bears the signature of Hishu Dewa No Kami Yukihiro and with an Ichi character, with one piece brass habaki, the green braid bound same hilt with parcel gilt bronze demon menuki, the parcel gilt iron fuchi and kashira worked with bands of waves, the iron tsuba decorated with figures in boats, the black lacquer saya with mounts to match the hilt fittings, 75.5cm, with detached iron kurigata CONDITION REPORT: . Fine pitting and scratches to the blade, small area of delamination near the habaki, and with four tiny nicks to the edge. A Bronze Cross of Rhodesia, to R44525 L/Cpl G Gayon Selous Scouts, officially impressed. B.C.R., 13 September 1974, L. Cpl. Gayon Gayon, Selous Scouts, in a display frameFootnote:- 'For gallantry and determination in action. During anti-terrorist operations in the North Eastern Border area, a patrol, of which Lance Corporal Gayon was a member, entered a terrorist ambush position at night and immediately came under fire. Although completely exposed to heavy terrorist fire from close range, Lance Corporal Gayon, without thought for his own safety and showing great personal gallantry, stood his ground and fought a pitched battle with the terrorists who were, after a short time, routed and forced to flee. This action ultimately accounted for five terrorists killed or captured and the recovery of numerous weapons and documents. By his personal gallantry, determination and initiative, Lance Corporal Gayon turned what could easily have been a most dangerous situation into a highly successful engagement. 102 awards of the B. C. R. were made between 1970 and 1980. Provenance DNW 4th December 1991.

Both these were popular subjects for photographers resulting in similar photographs by contemporaries such as Felice Beato who is believed to have photographed the Great Buddha at least twice, in 1864 and 1868. Near-identical compositions to both these photographs can be seen in two Felice Beato photographs, c. 1868, at Wellcome Library nos. 569190i & 569186i.
