A TIBETAN GILT-BRONZE DENSATIL-STYLE SCULPTURE OF A BODHISATTVA C.15TH CENTURY The finely cast Bodhisattva stands in tribhanga asana and holds a ghanta (bell) in his left hand and a mala (rosary) in his right hand. He wears a diaphanous dhoti with pleated sashes. The jewellery (crown, earrings, necklace, armlets, bracelets) and belt are adorned with semi-precious stones, glass and rock crystal, together with a modern slate stand, 23.5cm, 1.2kg. (2) Provenance: a London collection since 2005. This sculpture exhibits a number of stylistic similarities to sculptures known to have been made for the Densatil Monastery (Central Tibet) between the late 14th and late 15th century, which indicate a connection to the Densatil artistic tradition. These include the facial type of the Bodhisattva, the design of the jewellery and of his jewelled belt, the extensive use of glass next to semi-precious stones and a strong Nepali artistic influence. A LARGE CHINESE BRONZE FIGURE OF GUANYIN MING DYNASTY Seated in padmasana, wearing flowing robes, an elaborate necklace and a tall tiara, with her hair arranged in a high chignon with a holy medicine jar in her left hand, the right hand in the karana mudra. The figure rests on a large associated lotus stand with a small elephant to the front and two lotus-shaped candle holders to both sides, rising on a stem from a pond with stylised waves surrounded by an architectural fence, 61cm overall, 18kg. (3) Provenance: an English private collection. Cf. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, no.12.37.161 for a related earlier example. A CHINESE BRONZE FIGURE OF KSHITIGARBHA 19TH/20TH CENTURY Standing in tribhanga wearing a dhoti, a long necklace, a pair of arm bands and an elaborate tiara over a high chignon, holding a large fruit in his left hand, with traces of cold painted decoration to the hair and the jewels, raised on a double lotus throne, 50cm, 7kg. Provenance: formerly a private collection in Barcelona. This group of sculptures most likely imitate the 11th/12th-century Nepalese form of Maitreya, who holds a waterpot instead of a fruit. Cf. A MASSIVE CHINESE BRONZE FIGURE OF BUDDHA SHAKYAMUNI XUANDE 1426-35 Seated in dhyanasana, his left hand upturned, the right touching the ground, wearing long flowing robes with floral borders, elaborate bracelets, a necklace, a tall tiara and long earrings, his elongated earlobes framing his face with downcast eyes bearing a serene expression, raised on a double lotus throne, the surface with traces of gilding and polychrome decoration, 54cm, 17kg. Provenance: from the collection of Sir Framjee Dinshaw Maneckji Petit, 3rd Baronet (1901-1983) and Lady Sylla Dinshaw Petit (née Tata), purchased by Sir Dinshaw Petit, along with a jade bowl and a Blance de Chine figure from John Sparks Ltd. in London on the 31st July 1957 for £30, It is described as 'An old Chinese bronze figure of a Bodhisattva, lacquered in black and gold. 18th century.' A CHINESE ROBIN'S EGG GLAZED AND GILDED FIGURE OF A GENERAL QING DYNASTY Standing, wearing a full ceremonial suit of armour and boots, with his hands held in front of his body with one on top of the other, the face and palms gilded imitating gilt-bronze, the armour and helmet picked out in turquoise and coloured enamels, 22.5cm. Provenance: an English private collection, Hampshire, acquired in the early 20th century. It has been suggested that these figures are based on bronze prototypes produced during the Yongle and Xuande periods as diplomatic gifts to Tibetan leaders.
