A pair of fine gilt bronze candlesticks after designs by Jean-Démosthène Dugourc, early 19th century, with beaded drip pans to strigilated sockets with laurel cast undersides, on octagonal section bosses cast with masks and foliage, each atop four adorsed maiden headed swagged herms, the foliate cast domed bases with beaded outer edges, 39cm high, 16.5cm diameter The present candlesticks closely resemble a design traditionally attributed to architect and decorateur Dugourc (1749-1825), which features in a drawing in the collection of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris (GF 21 no. 38.378). During his illustrious career, Dugourc was appointed architecte et déssinateur du Cabinet de Monsieur to the Duc d'Orléans, brother of Louis XVI, and created costumes and stage sets for the Stockholm and Paris operas. The design of the present candlesticks was likely conceived during the early 1780s, when Dugourc worked in the Etrusque and Arabesque styles. A rare 18th century pair was sold at Christie's New York, 'Arts of France', 26 October 2001, lot 329. The only other known extant period pair is in the Wallace Collection, London. See P.
