FREDERICK HOLLYER (1837-1933)The Story of Psychethree platinum prints, (individual sized 16 x 11 1/4 in, 16 x 35 in, 16 x 11 1/4 in)in a black painted arts and crafts wood frame, inscribed with metallic paint, overall size 22 x 68 inProvenance: with Christian Klackner, 5, 17th East Street, New YorkThe frame is inscribed (left panel) 'Whilst Psyche wept upon the Rock, Forsaken, Alone, Despairing, Dreading-Gradually'; 'Forsaken, alone, despairing, dreading, gradually (centre panel) by Zephyrus she was enwrapt and taken, still trembling like the lilies planted high, through all her fair white limbs'; (right panel) 'Yet Love was not far off'.Hollyer was exhibiting copies of prints of the Story of Psyche as early as 1894 (see The Photographic Journal, Sept 22 1894 no.146) and into the the early edwardian period. Their subject matter reproducing the relief sculpture by Harry Bates of 'The Story of Psyche'. This exists as a silvered bronze triptych, now in the Collection of the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. M.H.Spielmann's 'British sculpture and sculptors of today' (1901) includes a full -page advertisement for 'Permanent photographs of the works of Harry Bates, ARA ... by Frederick Hollyer', including illustrations of the three panels of 'The Story of Psyche'.In the late 19th Century, Frederick Hollyer had established himself as a specialist in the photographic reproduction of contemporary art. Catalogues of his 'platinotype reproductions' were issued regularly between 1893 and 1911. Indeed Hollyer exhibited a set of platinum prints depicting Harry Bate's The Story of Psyche in the 39th annual exhibition of the Royal Photographic Society where it could be purchased for £6 6sh. In his review of that exhibition Alfred Horsley Hinton noted 'A finer or more complete idea of relief has probably never been produced than the reproduction of Harry Bates 'Story of Psyche', which is shown by F. Hollyer. The relief of the original clay modelling is so perfect given that it seems difficult to see why, from an aeshetic point of view, such productions should not be largely used for high class decoration...' A fine Japanese mixed metal inlaid Panel, by Hagiya Katsuhira, Meiji Period, richly decorated with two birds perched on flowering kiku stems and a thin bamboo stem, a third bird flying above, inlaid in high relief with carved gold, silver, shakudu, red bronze and shibuichi, signed on a tablet KATSUHIRA, original hardwood frame, 25 1/2 x 18 1/2in.Footnote: Hagiya Katsuhira (1804-1886) was born in Mito where he became the greatest metal artist of his generation. The second son of Teramon Yoshige, he began working for the Mito Daimyo in 1844. During his career he trained many of the most important late 19th and early 20th century masters, including Unno Shomin and Kano Natsuo.
A fine Chinese bronze and inlaid Gu-shaped Vessel, 17th Century, for the Islamic market, the flared rim with silver inlaid keyfret band, above a narrow waist with two ribbed collars, and flared base with raised foot, the body inlaid in gold with four registers of different arabic script (two on silver inlaid diaper cartouches) as follows:-La ilaha illa'l-lah (There is no god but God) and Yaumu'l-din (The day of Judgement)The base with crisp 12-character mark in square seal script reading Xuande Ernian Zhou Xijia Xinhuang Zhuren Zhi (Made in the Second year of Xuande, by Zhou Xijia, Master of Xinhaing). 11 7/8 in HFootnote: Compare to a 17th Century bronze Yi (water ewer) and bronze Kuei (censer) in the Victoria and Albert Museum (FE.109 - 1975 and FE.110 - 1975) similarly inlaid in gold and silver with inscriptions and with Xuande marks. The scripts are Kufic and possibly Sini.
